COSTUME, SETTING & LOCATION

The costume of music artists varies depending on its genre. This is as the genre has conventions that are typically followed to familiarise the audience. For example for a Hip-Hop video it would be expected for the men to wear big gold chains, baggy jeans and expensive trainers, while the women wear little clothing and high heels.

In contrast for a pop video, the costumes the artist would wear would be much more reserved, but will still be full of colour. As the target audience are those who tend to wear colourful clothing, furthermore they are of younger age making it inappropriate to have half men smoking cigars in a song filled with innocent lyrics .

Once again the location of music videos varies depending on the genre. Typically in pop music videos the location is very natural, for example at the beach or park to represent a sense of youthfulness. Furthermore these are places where youth typically enjoy their time demonstrating how they can relate themselves to the location of the song.

On the other hand, in Hip-Hop the location mostly relates to the lyric of the song. If the artist sings/raps about their life in the past the location is usually a dark dysfunctional area (for example deprived estates), as a lot of Hip-Hop artist have worked their way up from a tough life. However if the song is about anything else, the location is usually somewhere expensive as in the Hip-Hop genre wealth holds popularity.
