Welcome to SWC

Mission

Make researchers in science, engineering, and medicine more productive by teaching them basic lab skills for scientific computing

Why?

  • Scientists spend 40% of their time building or using software
  • 96% are mostly self taught
  • Standard industry knowledge and practices are not brought to academia

Who we are:

  • Volunteer organization
  • Scientists teaching scientists
  • 281 Instructors have taught a workshop
  • 265 Workshops for over 9000 learners

What we teach:

  • automate repetitive tasks (shell)
  • Track and share work (git and github)
  • build modular (and reusable) code (python)
  • Curate and interact with data (SQL)

What you can do:

  • Become an instructor
    • you do not need to be an expert in all subjects
  • Contribute to course materials
  • Organize a workshop
  • Build a community
  • Help with astro DC lesson (at hack together day)

Day 1
