The department of Aisne is located in the east of Picardie, in the north of France. The region is known for its medieval villages and towns, castles and fortresses and its strategic importance during the First World War. There are a number of battlefields and memorials that can be visited in this area of Picardie, as well as older historical sites and museums.

The medieval town of Laon was once the capital of France and is built high on a hill overlooking the fields around. Many of the old city walls are still standing; with some robust enough for you to even take your car on them! The historic centre of Laon is full of narrow cobbled streets.
