Group 1 Explores BYOD

The acronym "BYOD" stands for “bring your own device”, and refers to students bringing their own technology such as: smartphones, tablets, and laptops to their classrooms for educational use.
-The teacher can have students use video cameras on their smart phones to create presentations demonstrating that they mastered the content.
-Students with reading disabilities can bring and use their tablets to listen to audio versions of books.
-Students can use their laptops to access the most up to date edition of a textbook given a code from their teacher.
Digital camera: Students can document aspects of their education through photographs.
Students can access e-books to research topics on the internet, and utilize this resource in many other ways.
Portable DVD player with viewing screen: This device would be useful for students to independently watch educational DVDs in various locations.
Students in a science class may use their Ipads, or smartphones to access “skymap” when learning about constellations and planets. The map allows students to view the location of specific planets and constellations in real time using their devices.
Teachers can use polls through“poll everywhere” to gain insight into student knowledge. The polls can be short questions that the teacher asks and students respond using their devices.
Teachers can create "review blogs" where students write about their readings using their devices
Students may use kindles to access novels that are being read in class
Students in a music class could bring their Ipods to listen to music that is being discussed in class
Increases Student Collaboration
Saves money for the district as they don't have to provide the technology
Keeps content up to date as some textbooks are out of date
Extends the learning day

1.) It creates workforce ready students. BYOD prepares students for the devices they will use in their future.
2.) Allows teachers to teach responsible use of devices.
3.) BYOD calls for change of the traditional teaching model and allows for students to have more authority over their learning

Increased student motivation, engagement and problem-solving abilities. (Harris, Kent 2010).
Higher test scores in some areas. (Kent, 2010)
-To help make sure everyone has access to technology for research, I will encourage my students to bring their tablets when preparing their persuasive essays.
-Instead of having my students read prepared statements as they present their research on a Civil Rights Movement event, I will encourage them to work as a group and film their presentations.
-When reading To Kill A Mockingbird, I will encourage my students who receive a reader as an accommodation to listen to a recorded version of the novel on their Ipod.
-Instead of spending money to buy new calculators, I will allow my students to use the calculators on their phones when calculating exponents.
-In Science we are recording the distances paper airplanes fly based on different characteristics. Instead of copying their findings on paper, I will encourage students to bring laptops and net-books to record observed distances in Excel spreadsheets.
I will use "poll everywhere" to gain feedback from my students. I will ask them questions about our readings and have them answer the questions using their devices.
I will create a class blog for students to write on during class. The students will write about their readings that they have completed in class using their devices.
I will have students access readings that are available online using their devices.
I will have students use their devices to define certain literary tropes, then create their own examples.
I will have students use their devices when they are completing a webquest.
I plan to implement BYOD
in the classroom by:
Creating student blogs
Using surveys to get student/parent feedback
For projects (research to final presentation)
For:
RTI support
Assessments (STAR Reading/Math)
I will have weekly blogs where students can access the necessary paperwork for that week. I would include an outline of topics and assignments. This would allow me to communicate and share with parents.
I will allow students to use their cell phones or iPods to listen to educational podcasts with corresponding assignments. I will also create a podcast to go along with my blog .
I would incorporate real life pictures into my students’ academic portfolios. “Selfies” and other portrait styles are popular which would engage students. If students were to include pictures they took themselves in their reports and assignments, it would give them more personalization.
I would use e-books in my classroom. e-books are less expensive and easier to store.
I would have students use their devices to complete in class research
