UOSM2033

Final
Reflection

What was good?

I considered myself experienced in the following areas:

  1. Managing my online security and privacy
  2. Accessing, managing and evaluating online information
  3. Participating in online communties

What wasn't?

At the start of the module, I wasn't great at:

  1. Managing my online identity
  2. Building online networks around an area of interest
  3. Creating online materials
  4. Collaborating with others on shared projects

the self-test

managing my online identity

LinkedIn and Twitter? I know what they do, and what other services do, but struggled to utilise them all. I did research and found out the nitty-gritty of each network, which were worth having and which weren't. I created and put together a guide to create the personal brand.

When producing the blog, I learnt a lot about each network. This was a huge difference between going from not knowing much, to knowing a lot which allowed me to produce a blog on how to make a brand with purposes to each network.

Taking this forward: Through learning which network works best, I applied this to the UNA society by advertising events on Twitter, with a link through to the Facebook event, giving us a more specific number of attendees, whilst allowing me to use specific networks to their full potential.

Building online networks around an interest

Though I had a LinkedIn account for a while, I only saw it as a networking tool.  I didn't realise the 'group' aspect was so strong.  After a department event being organised on LinkedIn, I've been more pro-active in joining groups, specifically on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Taking this forward: After recently being accepted onto a graduate scheme, I hope to join the Politics department LinkedIn alumni group so I can give future students an insight into a graduate scheme and the application process, and be a panelist on the departments' career panel, next academic year.

Creating Online materials

I was invited to join a Google Hangout with the students from Singapore. It really gave me the confidence to create a vlog for Topic 5, which I definitely wouldn't have done before. Whilst I can't say I enjoyed the experience, I won't feel as uncomfortable next time I create a video-based piece.

Taking this forward:

The experience  made me step out of my comfort zone, and has given me confidence with regard to my opinions I otherwise wouldn't have had. I also believe the skills I have learnt from creating the vlog apply to giving face-to-face presentations in the future and has bolstered my confidence in presentations and interviews.

Collaborating with others

Collaborating with others was something that came very late to the module, and the most experience of this I had was editing a shared Google Doc.

I didn't think I would make progress with my rating on collaborating on a project until the #MANG2049 Google Hangout, and then again when both groups were on Topic 5.

Taking this forward: I have gained confidence with communicating with others on Twitter, whom I haven't met in 'real' life. I will practice video-calling more, so I feel more comfortable and natural doing it. I'll do this by video calling friends more, as I still find it quite an unusual experience.
