The initial purpose of a music video is to promote the artist. As the artist is the highlight of the the record label their main and soul purpose would be to make money for the record company. Artist like 'One Direction' has create a mass amount of popularity and money for their record label.

Not all music genre follow the common traditions of the major record labels. An example of this is dubstep. Dubstep is a dance music which suggest that the artist doesn't need to particularly be in the music video but the music is the main things that needs to be focused on.

Sometimes artis are use to symbolise greater or bigger things. But also to make points about themselves or about the world.

Michael Jackson was one of many artist that followed this style of video making. His 'Earth Song' music video was very moving to every single audience. 

Representation

The music video allows the artist to represent themselves, these representation can be almost anything e.g sex. Rhianna is a example of showcasing herself as a sex object and from this, it has become her unique selling point
