QUESTION 2: HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT (VIDEO) AND ANCILLARY TEXTS (DIGIPAK AND ADVERTISEMENT)?

How did you plan to use synergy in your production pieces?

Because we were presenting Kayla'O to be an upcoming mainstream artist, we thought it was really important that people needed to remember her in some shape of form. We decided it was best to do this by creating a signature look. Image is very much associated with an artist , as first impressions seem to mean everything within the music world. For example, when Jessie J first came onto the music scene, everyone knew her as the girl with a sharp, black bob and that fierce fringe. Rita Ora is always remembered at the girl with the bright blonde hair and the red, bright lips. Marina and the Diamonds wasn't seen without a black love heart on the side of her face, when her second album was released

How our inspiration helped us find our synergy:

When we were done looking at examples of different synergies that worked well for different artists, we decided that we wished to follow the path of Rita Ora and the bright red lips. It was a simple thing, yet helped to create the most striking (and memorable) images; especially upon Kayla'O's dark hair, bright eyes and pale skin.

Looking back at our synergy blog post...

It is fair to say that we have succeeded on what we wanted our synergy to be and how we wanted audiences to react to it. In the blog post, it stated: "In our digipak our key visual element will be the colour red.We will be using this throughout our promotional video, digipak and advertisement."

It went on to say:

"One way we will be linking together the above three things are by continuously showing red lips throughout the video ,the digipak and the advertisement. In our music video the artist will be wearing red lipstick."

The Advertisement

What aspects of the video link with the Digipak and Advertisement?

  • The artist is seen to be wearing red lipstick within every single shot.
  • The artist is wearing exactly the same shirt (when she's 'partying' with the image of the Queen) that is seen on the album cover
  • The colour theme of red, black and white crosses over of the video, digipak and advertisement.

It is the red lipstick (and the choice of clothing) that will allow the audience to recognise them as linked products.

I

How successful do you think your main and ancillary texts are?

Because of the strong link that was made with the lipstick in all three media texts, it is easy to say that my main and ancillary texts are successful. Following the conventions that would be seen in a music video, digipak and advertisement it is easy to say that the audience will make a link without hesitation. In addition, because I decided to make Kayla'O's red lips into a trademark, it helps to make that link that little bit more stronger!

Do you think your target audience would be attracted to them (the media text) ? Is so why? If not, why?

Yes, this is because there is such a strong link with the use of colours in both the ancillary and the music video.

Compare with existing products to illustrate how you've used synergy
