ONE DIRECTION
Andrew Goodwin's theory of the star image can be applied in this music video as there are lots of long shots, mid shots and close ups of the band individually when they are singing which increases
the bands brand
awareness
The beginning was interesting as it was almost like a narrative
as there was dialogue as though it was a movie. This was a music video set, in the middle of a desert which was illustrated through the scenery and props such as caravans, cameras, and people moving props. To reinforce this there was also an establishing shot at the beginning to familiarise the audience with the setting. Throughout the song there was a relationship between lyrics and visuals (Goodwin) as the boys were lip syncing throughout which increases its verisimilitude.
The concept was that the boys had arrived on a set and were planning to create a music video with one of the best directors in the industry. The actor Danny DeVito played this role. This is an e.g. of an intertextual reference as he is a very famous actor, well known for playing these types of roles. The conversation at the beginning is significant as he assigns each band member a theme. This links in with the different themes which the Spice Girls had used to promote themselves also. Danny says:
Today we're going to take it to a
new level.
Everyone is aware of the success of One Direction as they are supposedly the biggest boy band in the world. Getting a powerful actor to play a powerful director in this video therefore is a way of keeping audiences hooked as One Direction have yet to reinvent themselves and have not shown much versatility.
This impression audiences get from this dialogue is that they are going to create something different and new and so keeps them hooked to the idea of One Direction
ANALYSIS
OF
STEAL MY
GIRL
This video is generally a conceptual video apart from the beginning dialogue. Goodwin would state that this song is promoted through amplifying: This is where images are manipulated for audiences to interpret and engage with what's on screen.
The song is about a girl who everybody wants but one direction sings, "but she belongs to me". Throughout the music video there was not one sign of this girl who the song could have potentially been about which is one reason as to why this is a conceptual music video.
Dyers Star Theory can be applied as the 5 band members are the stars of the music video which is seen when the camera focusses on each member individually when they are singing.
The music video consists mostly of the five boys interacting with the scenery around them. There is only one scene where it is just the group performing, for example when they are standing on top of what looks like a mountain and singing to the camera.
Also from the dialogue at the beginning there was no need for the group to be introduced because there is the assumption everyone knows them, including this well known director
which reinforces their iconography as a boy band, which is their looks.
