MastheadThe name and logo of the magazine.  Big – one third of the page, clear and bold title which dominates the magazine.  It is used to be iconic and catch target audiences attention.  It identifies the magazine and contributes to a strong brand identity as a recognisable logo.


The strap line - Names of all the artists inside the magazine in bold, block capital font making clear title which the Mise-en-sense will increase the possibility that the target audience will read inside. The strap line will always relate to the magazine and what is included on the inside. It offers information on whats inside the magazine.


Mode of address/Cover image – this is used to illustrate the main stories that will appeal to the target audience giving a sense of recognition and identity.  It creates consumer appeal and interest.


Celebrity/ star – Someone well known that the target audience will be interested in. This offers the audience a sense of recognition, VFM, surveillance and aspiration. It shows how much it speaks to the audience.


Sell line – this sums up the mood and tone of the magazines ethos giving a sense of recognition. It is usually a short description of the magazines main selling point.


Lead line – They are the sub headings that lead the audience to want to open up the magazine giving them abundance.


Pull quotes – interesting bits of information usually said by the celebrity or someone important that will engage the audience.  It is used to attract the readers to buy the magazine and acts as a key signifier.




Sans serif text – typography without wings, straight forwards, bold, contemporary and masculine. 

Serif text – Fonts like Times New Roman or Baskerville old Face, which have swirls or little curves at the end of the letters.

Block capitals – clear bold and eye catching

Serif fonts – typography with wings making it look more elegant, classy,  old fashioned and usually a feminine typography.

Buzz words – used to draw attention and engage the reader. 

Puffs – a shape or colour to emphasis the words within the magazine making the audience feel engaged.

Superlatives – words used to emphasis the positive qualities of the magazine. It is an adjective taken to its extreme form in order to enhance the product appeal.

Convergence – anything digital such as websites, social media, iPods, iphones etc offering a sense of choice, control surveillance, community and belonging to the target audience.  

White Space – white parts of a page other than text or images.


Borders – enhances the product to catch attention. This is around the edge of the page.
