forms and conventions of real media products?

Whenever we, my group Rasses, Sharnette and I were discussing our product, it was always evident to each and everyone of us that our aim was to make our product very true to the conventions of comedy and meet the requirements of our target audience, who are teenagers ranging from between the ages of 14 - 18. Another essential target of mine was to use typical conventions of young people, as in costume and locations. Bearing in mind my age is in my target audience range I took into account, what would appeal to me and attract me if I was watching this film opening. This helped benefit our group in making various decisions such as some of the scenes we filmed and costumes worn and finally sound.  Moreover, as well as being as close as possible to a real product we used locations such as the character's bedroom, which are typically common places you will find a teenager in.

The genre of our opening we created was comedy, from doing our research on what the target audience wanted, survey's, questionnaires and discussions etc.  We found that the genre of comedy was at high request, which lead us to creating an opening with the genre of comedy, comedy is also a challenging genre to tackle in terms of meeting conventions and actually creating a sense of humor visually, I believed that we could take on the challenge. We ensured to have components in the opening that would make people laugh such as the girl popping her spots, or her uni brow and the cat screeching as she touches it.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

During our research, we looked into past media students products as well as famous products for consumers with famous comedian actors such as Kevin Hart, Eddie Murphy and Russell Kane. We were excited by and interested in the use of technical lighting purposely applied to create as sense of amusement as well as entertain, especially in comedy films. Another aspect I wanted to develop in terms of conventions was voice over. I feel directors utilize this to emphasize their characters introduction. The most obvious and important part of a film's soundtrack is dialog, so we took pride into using a voice over for the opening, when recording dialog, it should be as clean as possible. We conformed to use of voice over especially as it is comparable to the opening of the comedy film 'Norbit'

This is the opening scene for "Norbit" , starring Eddie Murphy and there are subtitles on to indicate the voice over. Then opening for this film is effective as it uses mid-shots as well as tracking shots, voice over playing without revealing the character's face this is effective as it captures then audience's attention for what the character is talking about or what they may look like, capturing the audience attention is important to us therefore we were eager to use this technique. We used this convention at the very start of the opening when showing our characters hand unlock the door while the voice over is running. Although this is our ideal film to recreate, we are inefficient of the requirements they have such as sound proof rooms, microphone or even recording equipment to create our clear voice over.  However we are able to remain successful by recreating aspects of the film in order to meet the all important conventions and having it at a excellent standard, even if it's at a basic level.

e.g Norbit uses a tracking shot to start a story-line engages the audience it is almost as if the audience follows. We also used this.

Through my research I learnt that high lighting is a key component in comedy films and I wanted to apply that to show my understanding of this. This is also essential in terms of creating a light atmosphere for my audience. High lighting would obviously connote positive emotions however in the film Juno the lighting subverts from these expectations as the characters negative emotion is juxtaposed with the lighting, this makes it humorous to the audience as they expect him to look positive but instead he looks stoney faced. Now this is a technique I would like to use in my film to add that same reaction from my audience.

I think this film is most suited to ours as it's scenes have various similar conventions such as mid shots, lighting techniques and editing comparisons. The close up here is similar to ours we wanted to convey our characters emotion visually to our audience and we feel we accomplished this because watching this scene connoted to me that the actor wan't happy and I feel recreated this effectively. by concentrating on a face, everything else is just a blur in the background. This shot magnified the actress and shows the importance of her expression  takes us into the mind of her character. I used close up's to let my audience feel feel extra comfortable by  using a zoom lens we were able to get the required framing, which captured that. We only let people that we really trust get THAT close to our face - mothers, children and lovers, usually - so a close up of a face is a very intimate shot, therefore we allow the audience create a relationship with our actress.

Continuing on from the previous slide, we have used close ups against the blurred background to connote her expression dismay and make it in focus so that the audience relate to how she's feeling, similair to THE ASPECTS OF JUNO who use this same technique.  out of the opening scenes mentioned the scene that is the most similar to our product,is this in Juno  because throughout this scene we see a number close up shots and mid shots while tracking movement of the camera to follow the young male's body language. There are more conventions within this scene that subvert from ours.  —We subverted from the use of mid-shot and two-shots. We didn’t use mid-shots or two-shots to show the relationship of the characters which is usually used in comedies as we only had one character and we thought close ups would be more effective. We conformed to the conventions of comedy with regards to the use of upbeat music as this also adds lightness to the opening, this makes the audience feel like the opening is introducing a comedy.
