Evaluation Q1

Laura Mulvey (1975)

My film includes Mulvey's theory as Kate is seen as a romantic object, she is viewed by the audience from a male protagonist position. The central character is male, POV shots from Owen's perspective encourage the audience to view the film from a male position. Kate is not exploited and sexualised but she is seen as romantic and a love interest.

The music video Anaconda by Nicki Minaj uses the objectification of women as close up shots of their bodies are shown. This exploits the artist and dancers. Another example of this in a music video is Pour It Up by Rihanna. Male music videos uses exploitation of women and use them as a sexual object, Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke is an example of this.

Other Texts

Naomi Wolf (1991)

I used elements of the Beauty Myth theory as I used two attractive women (Amy and Kate), Kate is seen as the love interest. This engages the male audience, and the female audience want "to be like" her. Kate is not sexualised and her skin is enclosed and not on show, going against provocative elements. I went against other elements as I used a dominant male character (Owen) and included him on my ancillary texts.

Gammon and Marshment (1998)

My text allows the audience to make different interpretations, they can take different meanings from the text. The ideas that the audience could take could be:

  • Memories
  • Friendship
  • Relationships
  • Dreams

Andrew Goodwin (1992)

My video shows the relationship between lyrics and visuals, this illustrates and amplifies the lyrics of the song.

"I'm on my way"

"When I was 6 years old"

"Through the back fields"

"One's brother overdosed"

"These people raised me, and I"

...

My text shows the relationship between music and visuals, this illustrates and amplifies the music.

As the tempo of the music slows down at 1:25 the POV shot of Kate is slowed down, this represents the music. The change from the first verse to the chorus is shown by change in shot, the tempo is faster so there is a fast paced driving scene.  The individual shots of each if the friends has an individual line and beat, this is shown by shots of friends alone.

...

Intertextual references of other music videos can be seen throughout my text, this relates to other shots and indication of ideas from Castle on A Hill, Sweater Weather and I'm Not the Only One.

Conventions

My music video follows most typical conventions of narrative and video genre, the video for this "indie/pop" genre uses connotations of love and uses an overlay filter. This follows a relationship with the lyrics and the video and uses typical close ups of the artist singing and in other shots. I went against other conventions (such as the voyeurism of women) as I wanted my target audience to focus on the genre and lyrics rather than the portrayal of attractive women.
