Double Page Spread analysis

Images

  • This double page spread use a variety of different images but all images do coincide as they are all related to in concert moments of Foo Fighters. This is important as the article is about Foo Fighters going on tour and this gives the readers an insight to a concert with Foo Fighters which is a great selling point for both the magazine and the band because it entices readers that are curious to view a concert of Foo Fighters and advertises the band at the same time.
  • Some of the images are annotated yet some or not this is to keep the concerts a little sacred and not give everything away in this article which means the readers will be left wondering.
  • The use of images makes the spread almost look like a scrapbook put together by the band. This makes readers connect on a higher level with the band and gives the spread a sense of authenticity.

The Main Image

A photo of the Foo fighters the topic of the article, the photo takes up two thirds of a page. The scale of the image shows that the image is the main image in comparison to the other images, the image has a slight sepia tone which continues to add a dated tone to the spread, the photo is a medium long shot that presents the band midst performance which, the photo could be seen as a record of past performances which goes along with the ‘haunted by the past’ theme their album is supposed to demonstrate. The musical instruments in the picture reinforce that the Foo Fighters are a rock band especially the electric guitars. The camera ensures we are able to see the whole band in this image by shooting the drum player through Dave Grohl's legs. The image is a low angle shot almost as if the reader is at the concert.

Text

The article begins with 'Its 10 o'clock on a Monday'. This style of text creates a story telling vibe almost as if the writer is telling us a story of Foo Fighters life. This also backs up my point of the article being a lot like a scrapbook. This is important as it creates a bond between reader and writer which keeps the reader interested. The use of pull quotes in the article isn't too much which is good as to much would make the article look a little to professional which Q have aimed not to do. Pull quotes are good when aiming to attract readers to a particular part of the article or entice them to continue reading a particular article.

Layout

Like any other magazine this spread is laid out in three columns per page. This means as the article shares the same styles and conventions it is still slightly different. The layout represent a scrapbook due to its overlapping images and overall look of the spread is almost childish. This also links to the way in which the reader speaks to the audience. The way in which the article is almost as if the reader is story telling to a group of children. The article also has drop caps to highlight the beginning of each story for both pages. This pulls the readers eye towards this story or word.

Features

I chose to analyse the main double page spread but this article or story actually is 9 pages long. In this double page spread alone there is no sidebar, no by line and no title. However these are featured throughout the 9 pages. This amount of pages is somewhat a good idea as it contains there whole life and shows Foo Fighters as an open book.

Target audience

As I mentioned before this spread looks like a scrapbook and the language used addresses the readers almost as if the writer is a storyteller telling a story to children. This along with percentage of the spread taken up by the images used suggests that this article is aiming to target teenagers more than anything. The article is bright and colorful which appeals to a younger more trendy audience. Although Foo Fighters are more of a mature rock band. With both considered t is safe to say the article layout and design attracts a younger audience whilst the  band featured appeals to an older and mature audience.

Colour

The page itself is plain white and the text is black. This highlights the text and more importantly the images stand out even more. The colour scheme emphasizes the images even further which again looks like a scrap book. The colours used do match Q's house style and upon first glance at the spread it is easily recognised as Q.

EXTRA

  • The eye flow in the images is mysterious as in none of the bands members are directly looking at us the reader apart from the casual group photo overlapping the main image on the left.
  • Both pages are numbered and are followed by the article date and the Q logo. This is basically to let the reader know who the magazine belongs to and is used as a trademark.
  • The images used represent the band as mature yet laid-back. The image of Dave drinking a bottle of beer shows him as any regular man drinking a beer to unwind after a days work. This give the readers a sense of equality with the band.
