Data Management Plans
Why do grant agencies and researchers think data management
is important?
- Ensure grant-funded data preserved for the future
- Enable validation of your results by other researchers
- Encourage you and other researchers to expand on previous data
White House directive:
"Increasing Access to the Results of Federally Funded Scientific Research" (2013)

Data Management Plans
Two main components to grant agency Data Management Plans (DMPs):
- What type of data will be generated?
- How will that data be preserved and re-used?

Data Management Plans
1. What type of data will be generated?
- What is the intellectual category of data being created?
e.g.: documents, images, tabular data, key:value pairs, bibliographic data

Bonus #1: data and metadata encoding schemes
Examples:
1. Use of Dublin Core scheme with XML to encode metadata:
Citizen Attitude Survey: Urban Problems in Ten American Cities, 1970 (ICPSR 7340)
2. Use of DDI (Data Documentation Initiative) scheme with XML to encode metadata:

Bonus #2: use of naming authorities and ontologies
Examples:
1. Use of GeoNames to disambiguate places with same name
Richmond, CA (5387428) ≠ Richmond, VA (4781708)
2. Use of VIAF to disambiguate personal names
Roger Williams, 1604?-1683 (VIAF ID 41882851) ≠
Roger Williams, 1924-2011 (VIAF ID 66678007)

Data Management Plans
2. How will that data be preserved and re-used?
- Who will act as steward of the data, and if that person cannot, what is the contingency plan?
___________________________________________________________________
- Where will that data or digital object reside?

Writing a DMP using DMPTool
- Includes templates for DMP content
- Links to agency DMP requirements
- Collaborative (for multi-participant grants)
- Export DMP text for inclusion in application
