It can be anything from a few lines of code written by yourself, to a professionally developed software package.

Review your work and be explicit about your software use, esp. grant applications and publications (preferably with a DOI)
Attend a Carpentries course, and get your colleagues to attend too
Store your software in a repository and licence it
Get someone else to try to use your software and give you feedback
Talk to your RSE group and, if you don't have one, ask your senior management why
