Constantine the Great - Emperor of Rome

He moved the capitol of the Byzantine Empire to Constantinople

A peninsula was the perfect place for the city

The empire's navy could control trade in the Mediterranean

The Byzantines taxed trade and became rich

The city's proximity to water made trade easy

There were many ports, and trading ships came often

The empire's army could travel quickly and in large numbers by water

The peninsula's location made defending nearby land borders convenient as well
The city was both beautiful...

...and functional

Constantinople's location, beauty, and functionality made it an important city
