Evaluation Question Four

My Target Audience

My target audience for all my products would be teenage males from the age of 17 - 26, from London, since the artists are debut artists, the the target audience would have to be local. Our target audience can also be for those teenagers that have lost loved ones because our album is based slightly round that.

I found my target audience by looking at similar artists to our artists, like, Krept & Konan and Chipmunk.

Throughout the process of making the music video, I have asked from feedback at different stages to help me improve my work. The feedback I got guided me in making better products, as there are many things I learned from the feedback, that I didn't know yet.

I will be  thinking about what I learned from the feedback that I received at three stages of production.

1. Roughcut

Summary:

  • The first part of the song needs to be lip synced
  • Cuts between different shots need to be more smooth
  • Joshua's wearing all black in the second chorus, before the climax, where the camera goes up to the sky and back down
  • It cuts between the day and the night time, and it does not make sense
  • In the second verse, the camera moves behind the wall and comes back to the same artist, and it would be better if it moves to another artist or location, instead of coming straight back to Emmanuel

What I learned:

This bit of feedback allowed us to understand that something we all thought would not be much of a problem, actually was.  We shot the music in the daytime and the evening, but while we were doing this, we didn't think anything of it. When all the clips were together, we saw that it might no be a good thing to do but we could leave it and it wouldn't be that noticeable. After the feedback, we understood that it looks strange and lacks continuity. This taught us that while filming, we have to notice for continuity, and when re-shooting the evening shot, I made sure I looked for that, for example, when Joshua put the black hoodie on top of the white t shirt, for the last chorus, at some points he did not zip up the black hoodie completely, so we could see some white. I noticed that I had to be zipped completely. Also, the feedback taught us to use effects and transitions effectively. The transition where we go behind the wall but instead of going to another location or artists we returned to the same one, which was ineffective and unnecessary.  Therefore any other transitions/effects were not just put in without proper thought. The feedback taught me the importance of lip syncing. Of course I knew it was important and had to be done right, but I didn't know how noticeable it is to the audience in comparison to the the people doing it.

2. Final Music Video

Summary:

  • We met the target audience (Video One)
  • Smooth transitions (Video Three)
  • Good editing/editing to the beat (Video Four)
  • Good performance and all artists showed well (Video Three
  • Good and clear narrative (Video Four)
  • Listened to rough cut feedback (End of Video Two)

What I learned:

This feedback was less informative for me since  we got so much at the rough cut point and improved on them. The feedback I got for this makes me think that the music video that we created was good and we were successful in reaching the aims we set out to reach, such as,  attracting to the right audience and adding a focal point of the music video that it visually good but also has theoretical meaning. This also taught me that the narrative was clear and had an impact as I was worried people wouldn't understand what we was trying to do. Using the feedback to think about possible changes I would make if I could, it would be to make the importance of the main effect more clear. The audience likes that bit off obvious edit, but no one spoke about the change of colour of the clothes and the possible meaning.

3. Ancillary

Summary:

  • Simplicity is effective (Ancillary Feedback One and Two)
  • Colour scheme is good (Ancillary Feedback Two)
  • CD artwork is not clear at first (Ancillary Feedback Two)
But other feedback likes it but not the inside background(Ancillary Feedback One)
  • Picture position and effect on advert is good (Ancillary Feedback One)
  • Products look real (Ancillary Feedback One and Two)

What I learned:

I learned from this feedback that their might have been conflict between to key things that I wanted to be included in my digipak - simplicity and relating to the audience by including an urban feature. Although I still included both, I would now change that on reflection. I would still include both relents but present them in a simpler way. Also, I learned that being simple was the best route, as would allow the target audience to recognize it. The simple advert was also not bland due to my use of the duplicating/shadow effect.

Significance of Feedback

Firstly, I think audience feedback is important because my products would look much more different (and worse) if I didn't get feedback. This is because I am not part of the target audience and I am not even close, so I would not know what they expect, or what the would like. Also, the all feedback I got required more change than I would have expected, even feedback from those who were not the target audience but felt like they knew what the target audience would like I also think that the target audience expected more that I thought they would. This taught me the importance of the target audience to artist - especially debut artists. Audience is importance for the artists because they need supporters and therefore income, as well as to spread the brand image.
