About Me

Think of something you learned recently.

How did you learn it?

If you had to teach it to the person beside you, would you do it the same way?

What We'll Talk About

In today's ever-changing web development landscape what is really required to improve ones existing skill set? What are the challenges that newcomers face when getting into web development? This talk will focus on how we should educate the next generation of web developers, designers and site builders, the alternative forms of education which exist and how to get involved, engage and teach people how to code.

Today we'll talk about

  • Challenges of breaking into a community
  • How to get involved, and engage others
  • How to teach others, and how I've learned to teach people how to code

how do i improve my skills and get new ones in today's web landscape?

Willingness to learn and challenge oneself.

ABL.

Always be learning.

why should i care?

To create wealth you must create value to others. To create value to others you must learn.

Life long Learners

things I've learned

Getting involved + Engagement

network outside your community

The only way to bring new people into your community is to get outside of it.

Most people who work with Drupal, didn't start out that way.

create shared value for others

READ YOUR AUDIENCE

teaching

BE EMPATHETIC,

AND DON'T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS

be transparent and authentic

tell. show. try.

Build, break, and fix things together.

teach others to teach themselves.

to recap

Many ways of learning.

Whether through an institution or not, learning is learning.

We should try to engage all levels of knowledge if possible.

Try things that scare you

you have to be willing to invest

As teachers and as learners we need to stay up to date.

Update your curriculum as often as possible.

Give context, real world examples, and provide meaning for learners.

Teach how to problem solve. Not just copy and paste.

We need to create lifelong learners

Thanks!
