Strong Storm Leaves Towns Underwater in Spain
Last weekend, a strong storm hit southern Spain, including the cities of Valencia and Málaga. Heavy rain started suddenly, and very quickly, many streets were underwater.
Some people were walking home, and others were shopping when the rain suddenly became very strong. Drivers were going home from work when water started to cover the roads. Some people were waiting for buses when the streets began to flood.
Soon, the situation became dangerous. Some people said they were trapped like rats as the water was rising fast. Cars and trash containers were floating down the streets, and in some places the water reached three metres. Many drivers were trapped in their cars, and rescue teams arrived to help. Ambulances were taking injured people to the hospital.
After a short time, rescue workers were helping people out of their houses, and neighbours were helping each other move pets and bags to higher places. Some roads were destroyed, and many cars ended up on top of each other because of the flood. Later, the rain stopped, but rescue teams were still working late at night. They were helping people find safe places to stay and checking which streets needed emergency help.
In the end, most people were safe, and the towns began to clean up the next morning. The rescue teams and volunteers worked together to fix the streets and help families return home.
Little by little, life in the towns started to feel normal again.
