Reducing Airborne Transmission

Keep your distance as much as possible. Do not greet physically. Do not share pens / mobiles.

Wash / disinfect your hands frequently.

Disinfect hands on entering room and after touching face / mask.

Avoid touching your face. Especially your eyes, nose, mouth or mask.

Tables and frequently touched areas/ items will be disinfected between and during classes.

Wear your face mask properly to limit transmission via droplets. Cover your mouth, nose and chin. Remove by elastics.

Rooms will be aired before, after and during classes to limit transmission via aerosol particles.

Part 1: Photos

  • Remember: Not all direct questions answered with a  simple yes or no.

  • Read the questions BEFORE you listen! DO NOT TRY TO MULTITASK FOR 45 MINUTES!
  • Predict the conversation by reading BEFORE!
  • Consider different ways answers could be said BEFORE!
  • Watch out for similar-word and same word distractors!
  • Answer questions DURING listening

Part 3: Dialogues (continued)

  • INFERRED MEANING: consider what is suggested, not only what is literally said.
    • What about their tone of voice (happy, tired, annoyed….)?

 

  • "Where most likely are the speakers?" Questions about general meaning can be answered near the end. Focus on questions for detail while listening.

 

  • Pay attention to graphics. The information in the graphic and dialogue may be different (an update / change?)
  • Some conversations include THREE speakers. The third usually speaks to confirm details.

  • Read the 3 questions and answers BEFORE listening.
  • Listen to the title of the recording
    • Questions  89-91 refer to the following weather report
  • Be careful of numbers and quantities  (16 / 60, 2 weeks / a couple of weeks)

    • order, table, menu, bill = restaurant
  • Pay attention to the graphic above some of the questions
    • The information in the graphic may have changed!
  • INFERRED MEANING: consider what is suggested, not only what is literally said.

LISTENING

Part 5: Incomplete Sentences

  • Time – not more than 15 minutes – do this section first
  • Decide the type of question: grammar, vocabulary… tenses, conditionals, causative verbs, -ed / -ing adjectives, comparatives & superlatives, active or passive….
  • Decide what part of speech is needed (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, linking word…), check prefixes / suffixes.
  • If you are not sure, eliminate incorrect answers first.

Part 6: Text Completion

  • Time – 10 minutes MAX

 

  • Read around the question before answering the questions. The text must be logical!

 

  • Choose the correct verb form, look for clues in the text (e.g. last week, next month, recently, ago…). Clues could be in following sentences

Part 7: Text Comprehension

  • Time! You need at least 50 minutes for this part.

  • Look at the questions before reading the texts.

  • Answer the easier questions first (e.g. the ones asking for specific information, not the inferring ones.) 

  • Look at the key words in the questions and scan for them in the text.

  • Be aware of synonyms in the text and in the answers.
