sTRENGTHS

One strength of our preliminary video was the way we followed the conventions of the indie-pop genre. Concept videos are typical of this genre so we were able to portray the genre of our video immediately.

 

Indie-pop videos tend to use seemingly irrelevant shots. However, when edited correctly, this makes for an interesting and aesthetically pleasing music video.

sTRENGTHS

Another thing I feel we did well was the edit, which was done using Final Cut Express. I was responsible for editing our video and made sure all the cuts were on the beat of the song. This was especially important when I used a series of short clips consecutively as it added to the professionalism of the finished video. I decided to use straight cuts as I felt this best matched the tone and beat of the song. If I had used transitions, it would have softened the cuts between shots and wouldn't have been as effective.

Although we did not use a huge range of different shots, I believe those that we did use reflect the genre well. We used:​​

  • Mid shots
  • Close up shots
  • Tracking shots
  • Panning shots

Having only four types of shots within our video may also be interpreted as a weakness. When we film our final music video, we will focus on using a broader range of shots while still conforming to the conventions of our music genre. To do this, we may use different equipment - including a steadicam and a jib.

Prior to filming our music video, we did not discuss any theories or representations we wanted to include. This meant that our music video did not really have any deeper significance.

 

Before we begin filming our final video, we will have researched different theories. This will allow us to decide if we want our work to be influenced by a specific theory. We can also decide how we want things to be represented, i.e. females.

What I'd do differently

This preliminary task has been beneficial in helping me recognise what it is I need to do for my final video. I will now ensure I research different theories and look into which, if any, best suit the genre of my music video.

 

I would also use a wider variety of camera shots to demonstrate my media knowledge, whilst also conforming to the conventions of my genre. I would also like to experiment with different equipment.
