Question 4 - What have you learned from the audience feedback?

Rough cut feedback

We were told to add more of a structure to our video. Our pre-chorus initially consisted of the art walls in old street instead of black and white shots at the studio. This was confusing as the pre-chorus fits more with the chorus than the verses so we decided to change this so that our chorus and pre-chorus were black and white at the studio. This suited the structure of the song due to the tempo too. The fast to slow editing was praised but we were criticised on our lack of colour grading and special effects, which we were yet to add. In the end, we decided to implement more special effects than we intended to, to fit the contemporary style of our genre. We were also told to edit more to the beat, our shots were way too long. This later was said to be a strong point of the video.

What did I learn?

When being given our rough cut feedback it was clear that we had the basis of the video we thought would appeal to our target audience with our locations and intentions to have both fast and slow pace, obvious edits and colour grading. However, I learned that when editing and filming it's more obvious to you the edits and shots you choose to use so you tend to use less so that there's less chance of ruining your work; you need to include more obvious edits to appeal to the audience and have them notice what your video displays as a modern, indie-pop video. With our cutting to the beat, we did this more accurately and used shorter shots. When watching this at the cinema I could see that this worked very well and our shots didn't feel like they were too long and therefore the video did not get boring

Video feedback

As mentioned by this audience member and myself before, the edits are said to work well in the video and display aspects of the genre that should of course appeal to our target audience. This is a member of our audience who fits the exact consumer type we hope to appeal to. Given that she enjoyed the visuals and was able to identify technical aspects of the steady editing and special effects, I think the feedback we got on our rough cut really paid off given the response of the final product! This makes me confident with the final video product as I was unsure of what the outcome would look like to the audience. To me, the video seemed less appealing due to some shots and structure elements of it changing from how it was initially intended to be. As someone who storyboarded the video, this worried me a great deal. However, I think the feedback gives me reassurance that the outcome proved to fulfil its purpose and attract the audience members. The video still showed to capture the nature of the initial ideas and planning for the video and I realised this through the praise of the technicality and visuals. The technicals, as mentioned before were more so than intended but I think this was a great thing in the end.

Video feedback

When watching the video in the cinema the video got a nice warm reaction. The two people besides me were very supportive of our video and one said that there was a lot of locations that worked well.  The general feedback and reaction that the cinema audience had was strong and welcoming and this made me feel that our video carried out what it needed to do, it showed a lot of people a new song, which was also said to match Sophie's face and emotion. I think our end product worked well but there is room for improvement of course. I think that synergy was not really picked up on because it was very vague and at the time of filming we did not know that the synergy was going to change vastly. When pointed out that the art walls are synergy it did seem to make sense to the audience members that I talked to but it wasn't exactly prevalant to the audience instantly due to the vague nature of it. Next time, I would make sure to include a more clearer form of synergy. Whilst filming, the group and I wondered if a watch that Sophie was wearing would be good synergy, however, the watch was not on in all the shots so it was not possible to carry this through. In retrospect, the watch as synergy would have been a good idea.

Video feedback

The ratings of our video are fairly okay. Given that there were a lot more people than this, it does give me less confidence in the promotion of our video or how memorable it was. I do believe that the viewings are a good thing however as it shows that others went to the vimeo, after the screening, and decided to watch the video. The other videos show that 66 is around about an average. Some videos had 30-40 views and the highest was around 100, with one video with 200+ views.

Ancillary feedback

With my ancillary feedback I am very pleased with the response. Elements that I hoped would be picked up on by  my target audience were such as, colour palette, graphics and images used. The first audience member was one interviewed from the cinema screening. This audience member thought that my ancillary products linked really well, they even picked up on the overall synergy which I was worried wouldn't be obvious with these products. They liked the visuals and aura of the ancillary products, particularly the CD and the "artistic" use of the art. They also liked that the artists name was bigger than the album name, a debut album convention. They mentioned that this would instantly draw attention to who the artist is, asking "who is Sophie?", evoking a sense of curiosity. The second audience member had to be told about the synergy but thought that it linked especially well. They complimented the colour palette in correlation to the genre. This was something again I was worried about as there is a wide range of palettes that suit the genre depending in which direction you go. We also had a wide colour palette but the feedback shows that the colours used were appropriate.

Artist name bigger than album name and the rest of the text across the ancillary products. This was said to attract audience attention immediately

Colour palette of pink and blue in a gradient was praised as it is appropriate and fits the genre very well

Graphics implied as innovative and a clever use of art, synergy was pointed out by an audience member of the art

CD cover was said to be clever and well executed. This prompted the audience member to realise the synergy so proves itself as an integral part of my digipak.
