FILM PROMOTION

FILM POSTERS

Prior to the 1990s illustrations were more common than photos

Often includes:

actors names

director's name/credentials

film title in large lettering

tag line

release date

Film posters are used to promote the film by being displayed inside and outside of cinemas, as well as in streets and shops

FILM POSTER: teaser poster

A teaser poster is an early promotional poster that contains a basic design or image that doesn't reveal much of the plot away

The purpose of the teaser poster is to generate interest for the film

FILM POSTERS: character posters

Usually used for a film with an ensemble cast, character posters depict an individual character from the film

The poster usually contains a tag line that reflects the character - in this case a song that each character sings

INTERNET

Film companies use viral marketing online meaning they get free distribution of trailers on movie websites

They use hyperlinks on various websites that will link users to the film's website or social media accounts, encouraging audiences to investigate the film and the actors.

INTERNET: social media

75% of people aged 16-85+ are on social media, including sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Pinterest.

Therefore people in charge of promoting a film can use social media websites to reach a variety of audiences

"Social media is where conversations naturally take place, while official websites require users to be driven to them" Katie Khan, head of digital at Paramount Pictures UK

By setting up social media for the film itself, as well as having social media accounts for the actors in the film, makes sure that a wide variety of people will definetly know about the film's release. As well as this, sponsorship with key social media companies will ensure good publicity for the film

TV

Hollywood movie distributors spend on average $4 billion a year to buy advertising e.g. TV commercials, newspaper ads

Broadcast and cable TV are considered the main platform in advertising films to audiences quickly

EXAMPLES:

episodes on talkshows

episodes devoted to the film, actors or director

interviews with the actors and director

paid broadcast of behind the scenes footage

EXAMPLE: The Hunger Games & Facebook

The movie made an official page that got over 20,000 likes

It released exclusive pictures or clips from the movie

'The Capitol', the fictional government from the film, also had an official page which was updated in character

It also had a 'District Identification Pass' where people could be sorted into different 'districts' based on the film, encouraging audience participation whilst engaging the audience, getting them excited for the film's release

EXAMPLE: Star Wars & TV

The 2015 Star Wars film organised interviews that were released on FOX 5 DC's YouTube account, which interviewed the main actors within the cast.

As well as this three main actors from the cast appeared on The Graham Norton Show to advertise the show by speaking about it and showing an exclusive clip.
