A Target Audience is the particular audience group a media text is generally aimed at.

An audience are categorized into two profiles:Demographics and psychometrics

Demographics are characteristic utilized  to classify people for statistical purposes based on their gender, age, and race.

Psychometrics is a method of categorizing the audience in terms of social class, lifestyle and personality characteristics.

Why an audience is necessary in a media text

Generally, if there is no target audience, then it will be difficult for film makers to have ideas on what their film will be based on. The audience's satisfactions is significant in creating a media text as it contributes to making a successful product.

Wider audience: Action/Thriller

In one of our lessons, we were asked to research the target audience of our genre through Yougov.uk

One film we looked at was The Bourne Ultimatum and we identified that the common audience are men from the ages 55+. I compared this demogractics to the film Lucy and the results were also similar. This suggests that the Action/Thriller genre attracts  men from the west country. Men who are interested in Action/Thriller movies are usually upper class.

We had asked different people ranging of different ages to give their opinion on weather they would be interested in watching our film. We specifically asked men because that was the common audience for our genre from our research . They told us that they would be interested in watching our film and that was the answer we were looking for. However, our target audience for our film is men from the ages 15 and over. We challenged  our research as we believed that due to the codes and conventions as well as the social groups in our film, it would bring attraction to the younger generation.
