corollary:

The SAC is preparing a document which will "bless the SCs into existance" by recognizing the current SCs and establishing rules to create, dissolve, join an SC

... it's a lot of work done by very few people

what should the SC Advisory committee do

  • Best strategies to leverage funds for the scientific community in general and SCs in particular
  • Best strategy to leverage Enabling Science funds during/after COVID
  • Impact of corporate membership on the science community
  • Set up a call to explain benefits of membership to chairs
  • Committee should be called to evaluate the messages that are sent to chairs e.g. about membership campaign or fund raising.

when called to give expert opinions the committee has gathered rapidly and delivebated swiftly.

However, it is not very engaged in the LSSTC board processes.

Note on Enabling Science (+)  funds

Many of the sponsors that applied for undergraduate support are deeply involved in SCs. Ask them what they want to do before you decide the fate of those funds

  • Meetings in person are going to be delayed, but they continue to be necessary for the SCs.
  • We do not know how long the COVID situation will last (trust me, I have done no work but COVID work modelling doomsday for the past 2 weeks with the Delaware Emergency Management Agency... a sensible plan may be
    • still provide funds for meetings (i.e. not limit the call to request other kind of funds)
    • the meetings may be in person if the COVID allows and if not the funds can be distributed to support research identified as critical in virtual, and therefore less expensive, meetings (e.g. a summer student or some grad student salary or even an honorarium).
    • the research identified as critical should be identified as such in some communal sense rather than individually

The Enabling Science committee could ask the SCs Advisory committee for their recommandations!

Note on PCW

My understainding is that the PCW is not actually canceled: the in-person meeting is canceled because safety first .

PCW stands for Project Community workshop. The PCW is not primarily a place where the subsystem have the opportunity to meet: it happens to be a place where the subsystems can meet but it is primarily a place where the Rubin Observatory and the Scientific Community can meer

It would be my responsibility as SC Coordinator (and chair of TVS SC) to loose it if the Community was not asked what they think we should do with the Project Community workshop.

I do not know what the best thing for the SCs is reg the PCW but I sincerely hope we will be asked.

Legacy Survey of Space and Time Science Collaborations Nexus

Good feedback last year, resubmitted for $2M. Does not fund science, only infrastructure

INFRASTRUCTURE

  1. Dedicated meetings with the leadership of each node to help establish a formal structure and operating process that is consistent across the nodes.
  2. Distribution of periodic surveys to members of the Nexus to measure perceptions of the effectiveness of their node and overall LSST Nexus collaboration and identify any areas for improvement.
  3. Training sessions conducted by Dr. Sleesman (Science of Team Science Expert) with the leadership of each node to build their knowledge and skills related to effective teamwork.

Fundings and needs

EDUCATION

  1. LSST summer boot camp. To foster an inclusive and diverse LSST SCs population we will organize an LSST summer school (modeled on the Fermi Summer School)
  2. Webinars to train members in the use of data and software produced by any other node and by LSST.
  3. National and international scholarly exchanges for junior members.

RESEARCH

  1. Activities to focus and optimize the research efforts for the entire Nexus. Support 3 postdoctoral multi-SC position in activities fostering synergy.
  2. Annual target of opportunity (ToO) data science studies equitably support a diverse population.
