Upon graduation, the student is awarded an Associate of Science degree in Substance Abuse Counseling

The program is designed to prepare the student to help individuals with job readiness knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be successful in the helping professions; acquire paraprofessional competencies applicable to the substance abuse treatment field and many other behavioral health professions; learn about theories as they apply to working with clients, skills needed to apply the theories, and promote an understanding of how substance use disorders develop in individuals as well as how treatment is designed to meet their individual needs.

Substance Abuse Counseling - 100% Online

Intake and Orientation: Clarify rights and responsibilities of both client and treatment facility, facility rules, tour appropriate areas, explain treatment process, help client to understand what is expected, and what s/he may expect.

Counseling: Be able to: select the appropriate counseling model(s) for a situation; use one-on-one and group counseling skills, including empowering clients, focusing on strengths using motivational interviewing.

Crisis Intervention: Prepare to recognize and respond appropriately respond to signs of slips, relapse, co-occurring disorders, and mental health concerns. 

Patient Education: Teach and present prevention to help clients understand the processes of addiction, withdrawal, relapse, and recovery; convey this information in terms understood by clients in group and individual counseling environments.

Case Management: Be able to assist with assessment, social service resources, support groups, rehabilitation options and mental health resources.

Make yourself a schedule just as you would have for a physical/ground class.​

Create a study space in your home with no TV, radio, and that is separated from other family members.​

Utilize the campus tutors during your "Scheduled" class day to give you face-to-face support. Communicate, communicate and communicate.​

Online Science Class Requirements

Classes will be recorded and then put into the weekly lecture for students to go back and review​

Students will not be allowed to miss more than two (2) live classes for the term without proper documentation.  If the student misses more than two (2) live classes, they may be dropped from the class.​

Admissions Requirements -

Substance Abuse Counseling

• Complete and sign an application.

• Be 18 years of age prior to the start of classes.

• Provide a valid Driver’s License or government issued photo ID.

• Provide proof of High School graduation (Diploma) or successful completion of the General

   Education Development test (GED), or may prove a recognized equivalent of a high school

   diploma, or verification of graduation from an Associate degree or higher program from an

   accredited college or university. Acceptance of any of the documents listed above is at the

   sole discretion of the Institution.

• Pass the SmarterMeaure Learning Readiness Indicator with a minimum score of 70% on

   Technical Competency, 70% in Life Factors, and 60% in Technical Knowledge (please see the

   SmarterMeasure policy for more information).
