Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Production company
We decided to use Big Talk Productions as our production company as they are a British film and television production company. Although we are an independent production, we wanted to be as professional as we could and decided to use production/distribution companies that already existed in the market rather than creating our own. Big Talk Productions are a small independent company, who are best suited to producing our film as they have previously produced independent films e.g. Attack the Block.
Distribution company
We settled on using Studio Canal as our distribution company as they are a French-based production and distribution company. Although it is not a UK based company, using Studio Canal could help us gain a greater audience and perhaps attract people from outside of our target audience. From this, we could expect a wider release if our film progresses well.
Studio Canal is, in fact, a big major company who have helped produce/distribute a whole library of films. However, more suited to our film, they also helped in producing Attack the Block.
Distribution company
Due to the fact that our film is an independent production, we decided to use another distribution company. Momentum Pictures was one of the leading independent motion picture distributors in the UK and Ireland. However, in 2013, Entertainment One acquired the owner of Momentum Pictures, Alliance Films.
Momentum Pictures is now a big major company who have been involved in distributing a whole range of films. This could again help us gain a wider audience and help us gain a wider release later on.
Type of release
Our film will have a national/restricted and both a theatrical and digital release. National meaning throughout a whole country, as we have a good range of production/distribution companies to help us. A digital release will help us due to our target audience being young teenagers. Our target audience are frequent users of technology, therefore it will be a good way to get them to view our film and to attract the attention of a wider audience.
Having Momentum Pictures as our distribution company may also be able to gain our film a wider release, if it progresses well.
Impact on title sequence
Due to our film being an independent production, our title sequence contains a few company idents instead of just one like a mainstream film would have e.g. 20th Century Fox. We decided to make our titles simple yet effective; the font is white and visible yet they fade out when they disappear.
