Forest Cities in China - strategy to achieve enviromental sustainability?

What are forest cities?

  • small, compact and green cities
  • made up of tall and middle size buildings surrounded by the leaves of trees, shrubs and flowering plants, so called “Vertical Forests”
  • low energy consumption through vegetative filters
  • take up little space, building vertically up
  • purpose: "air-cleaners"

Why are vertical forests crucial for China's urban cities?

  • improve air quality

Millions of people are abandoning the countryside and moving into cities. It's very important to completely change how these new cities are developing.

  • internal migration

Where are they ?

Where are they ?

Nanjing

Where are they ?

Liuzhou

Who is affected by this change ?

We think – and we hope – that this idea of vertical forests can be replicated everywhere.

  • inhabitants breath fresh air
  • China is closer to reaching its air pollution target
  • world is a step closer to reducing the effects of climate change

How promising do you believe this change to be in achieving more environmental sustainability?

  • promising
  • suck carbon dioxide, produce oxygen
  • absorb the dust produced by urban traffic
  • the concrete needed to build vertical forests may produce more CO2 than the trees could absorb
