Human activity in producing the urban heat island in Beijing

The temperature of urban areas can be significantly higher than that of the surrounding rural areas. This fact is known as the "Urban Heat Island" effect.

"Urban Heat Island" effect

UHI effect- CAUSES

  • concrete and man made surfaces
  • Less water in the soil and environment
  • Excess energy from buildings

UHI effect- effects

  • extreme weather and climatic events such as storms, hurricanes, and floods
  • Increased air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions

  • human health ( heat strokes etc. )

UHI effect- BEIJING

  • high levels of air pollution mainly due to coal consumption (coal consumption 30% above average during heating season)
  • soil erosion in in-land areas due to overgrazing and deforestation causes clay particles to loosen and be blown into the city
  • high levels of carbon monoxide due to slow driving motorized vehicles

air pollution
