QUESTION 2: How does your media product present particular social groups

Gender

  • In terms of gender, I believe that my magazine conforms to the typical conventions of soul magazines. This is because like other soul magazines, my magazine is mainly dominated by female artists, although male artists are evident on soul magazines. This is evident as on the front cover, contents page and DPS the main images are females and the sub images on my contents page are also females, as shown below.

Age

  • My magazine represents a demographic of individuals aged 16-25. This is evident in my magazine as i have used models aged between 16-25. For example, the models on my front  cover, DPS and contents page are all aged 17. Also, one of the models on my contents page is 18 and Alicia Keys has also been used to represent the older age group as seen below.

Ethnicity

  • My magazine represents a demographic of individuals from Black African and Caribbean ethnic backgrounds, which therefore conforms to typical conventions of soul magazines, such as Echoes magazine, as they are mainly aimed at individuals from that background. Hence, why I have only used models from those backgrounds. I have also used an artist from that background which is Alicia Keys in order to represent that ethnic social group.

Region

  • I believe that my magazine doesn't have a specific region., as it is available for people worldwide. Hence, why I have used English and a generalised form of language which majority of people understand. I have also not included any slang but in some instances have used sophisticated vocabulary. This is evident in my DPS, as i have used words such as "embarking."

How do the models, layout design and language combine to present a particular social group?

  • The models, layout design and language combine to present a social group of Black African Caribbean individuals aged 16-25 from working and middle class backgrounds.
