How does your media product represent social groups?

My Magazine

My magazine is aimed at both males and females, to avoid gender discrimination. The main primary target audience is people aged between 16 and 32, the main age of my audience being 20 years old. I also have a secondary audience which are people below the age of 16 and older than 32. Due to this all aspects of my magazine must represent and be suitable for this age range. For example the artists featured in my magazine are of a mature age and are not specific to a particular age group.

Social Groups

The contents of my magazine must also fit in with the social group of the target audience that my magazine is aimed at, this is why i have decided to create an indie magazine so it appears to a variety of people. The social groups of this particular group are of people that listen to music online, go to gigs, partying and having a good time in their spare time. The majority of the features in my magazine are from live interviews or are articles about what has happen in the wild and crazy times of the celebrities these social groups idolise, this helps attract the social groups my target audience has.

Class Representation

There is not one particular class that is encouraged to buy my magazine however it mainly appeals to working class and lower middle class audience groups. The band ' The Revenant' that are featured in the magazine come from a stereotypical council estate background that made music in their house without any recognisition. They made it in the industy and soon lost their fame, this gave them the determination to try hard to get back to the place they wanted to be. This storyline could inspire people of the same class background that is my target  audience

Gender

My magazine is aimed at both males and females as in the initial questionnaire is developed I found that 46% of my readers were in fact male. I have decided not to specify a particular gender. To ensure that my target audience did not feel like OPUS have a specific gender representation I have decided to use both male and female models on the front cover so that they do not see my magazine on the self and straight away decide it is a female or male dominant magazine. My magazine also features in trend music and artists that are varied within gender also preventing gender bias.

Youth/Subcultures

Youth subculture is a youth-based subculture with distinct styles, behaviours, and interests. It is categorised with music, fashion, intelligence within younger ages of youth (below 25). My magazine has a house design and features things to accommodate these ages. The indie genre of music accommodate all. My magazine represents subcultures as my audience can easily relate to their style. As well as this the stylish design of my magazine sets the indie subculture as it is unusual in design, like it's audience it is aside of the mainstream

Inspirationalor Aspirational

My magazines double page article is all about two people who's dream is short lived when a record label drops them, despite this they come back, with hard work and effort were able to come back better than ever. An article like this can inspire readers to achieve there goals no matter have barriers they face. As well as this my image show a professional theme, my target audience could idolise my models for their music or the stories that are told within my magazine. My magazine encourages positivity to my readers through the articles it feautres, it also only feautres artists that have a positive light in the media rather than rebels who will bring a negative theme to the the magazine and encourage the readers to follow in their footsteps.

The Revenant despite being dominated by the male lead singer also features a female drummer. Drumming is usually configured as a male instrument, the fact that a female is playing the drums could seem inspiring to the female audience to succeed in a male dominated industry.

The absence of the male singers face allows the audience to project the ideas that he is a modern-day everyman in the indie world he is someone people can identify with.
