I was also discriminated based on my ethnic background because of ethnic war in my country, so I also lived in another country for several decades, hoping the ethnic hate would simmer down. All of these circumstances made me very unemployable. That's the bad part of my background. The good part is, I was always an above average fast learner. I have a developer background from my high school education. I'm a very self sufficient learner. What I lacked was structure, support, guidance, method and so on.
When I found your #100DEVS course on Twitch I found what I was lacking. It gave me the strength to persevere daily. I was finally able to put in the work that was necessary. Never before have I been motivated to put in the hours every day for months, with no end in sight. What I did have before were short bursts of learning, that would fizzle out fast with no results. I would fail to retain focus, loose motivation and just fall back into depression, which I would then self medicate with pointless entertainment of mass media and games. Classic right?
So, one of the job applications I sent in they looked for Junior and Mid Frontend Developers. In my application letter I said: "I'm ok with the junior position, but I could probably do some of the Mid work as well". As soon as the test assignment came in it was clear they sent me the Mid test. It included required knowledge of (random tech removed) stuff I heard of, but didn't use before. To make things worse I was in a middle of a freelance job. They did, however, give a week to finish the assignment.
Well, like I said, I learn fast, so that was enough for me to learn the basics of those technologies and sucessfuly finish the test assignment. I was certain they would just eliminate me at some point during selection, interviews, documents I had to send that showed how much job experience I (didn't) have. But they never did. They sent me an offer for the Mid position with a pretty decent salary for my country. There is no way I could refuse them.
