Allocation Process - Lists

Projects have been shared with you on Minerva.

Each student must submit a ranked preference list of 6 projects

 

  • Students submit their ranked preference list of 6 projects by the 31st of March via a MS Forms (to be shared on Minerva).

  • If you miss the deadline you will be allocated a project form the shared list with no possibility of choice.

  • Please make sure that:
    - Your top 3 ranked topics have different contact supervisors.
    - You select 6 different topics id.

  • We will match you with a project within your ranked choice (trying to maximize your happiness!).

  • The projects allocation will be communicated by May 2024.

Allocation Process -

Competition Based

 

  • Competition based projects are indicated on the Lists shared on Minerva.

  • Please send an email to mscstats_dsa@leeds.ac.uk with your CV and a cover letter (up to 500 words) specifying the project you are applying for in the subject (eg. COMPETITION BASED PROJECT XX). Deadline 31st March.

  • You can only apply for one, but express preferences for other competition based in your email.

  • Promptly let me know of your Competition Based (or CDRC) outcome.

Allocation Process -

CDRC

 

  • If you have applied for a CDRC project and you have been successful, promptly let me know (there is a bit of paperwork to finalize ) - once everything is confirmed there is no need to submit your ranked preferences.
     

  • If you have applied for a CDRC project and you have not heard back by the 31st March, pleas submit your ranked preferences via the online form anyway. 

Supervision Info

  • Dissertation work starts in early June, after your last exam.
  • Contact your supervisor before June to arrange an informal meeting.
  • You and your supervisor(s) should arrange up to 6 hours of meetings (modalities to be agreed) - do this as soon as possible.
  • Consecutive meetings should not be more than 2-3 weeks apart.
  • Your supervisor will monitor your progress.
  • Students are expected to be on campus during their dissertation work.

Good Practice

  • Share a short report with your supervisor(s) ~2 days ahead of every meeting.
  • Practice on using latex with the provided template on Minerva. A very good online tool is overleaf.
  • Create a project on GitHub to share with your supervisor(s). (ABC for a Data Scientist!).
  • Learn how to use GitHub. Very good tutorials here: Atalassian and Software Carpentries.

Timeline & details


  • Deadline for submission of completed dissertations is 3.59 pm of Friday, 29th August, 2025 (British Summer Time).
  • The oral examinations and presentations will be held in the period from Monday 8th to Friday 19th of September 2025.
  • ​Arrangements are flexible and to be agreed promptly with assessor and supervisors (more details in the handbook).
  • All students must be available during this period.
