In my media product, We tried to attract and address our audience to psychological thriller fans, people who enjoy watching stories based on psychological disorders, and mostly to our target audience who are male over 25 so our target audience age is not too restricted and appeals to a mass audience. We did this through the use of mise-en-scene, camera, sounds and editing. I believe my opening sequence attracts my target audience as we created a very realistic plot. This will make the audience continue watching it to find out the story. We tried to make the mise en scene realistic as possible to convey our realistic plot. I thought about different aspects that would attract my target audience and how it would maintain the interest of the viewers.
To attract our audience; we showed emphasis on female audience allowing the target audience to connect with the protagonist. Normally the target audience for psychological thriller are male, but since the storyline is a problem that women face often it appeals to female too. This implies our media product can appeal to more than one target audience.
We had twists and turns in our plot which we didn't show in our opening media product. We strictly didn't want to give too much so we kept the details to minimum which helps the audience to have many questions while watching it. When watching the first three minutes of the opening scene, we expect to grab the target audience's attention straight away or you tend to lose concentration . We didn't want this to happen with our film so we made sure our media project was confusing so it will make the audience wanting to know what's happening. Our main character is an insecure women so the audience would relate to her easily as there's many women in the real world who have the same feeling about pregnancy. However through the film, the woman is not what she seems to be, revealing the fact there’s more to her past than appears, which leads to the death of her child. I believe this will affect the relation between the audience and the character as she's not what she appears to be.
The characters in our opening sequence wore casual clothes which appeals to our target audience. Normally when incidents happens, they are not planned and therefore their costume would be quite casual. In this way the audience can relate to the characters and also feel like the protagonist. Another way in which we attracted our our audience was through our cast. As the characters weren't too young it would appeal to a wider audience as normally people tend to associate younger audience with matters that aren't too important. However our film contrasts this.
Lastly, to attract our audience we used effects such as black and white. In the first few shots, the high angle we use is in black and white. This contrasts the rest of the opening scene which appeals to our audience as it suggests to them something is not right. The shot is shown all of a sudden which makes the audience feel uncomfortable and builds tension as it implies something wrong is about to happen. This is what the audience seek while watching a film related to this genre and so it would appeal to them.
