Analysis Of Previous Year Music Video

Tears- Clean Bandit

Video created by Grace Pye, Lawrence Bartlett and Damita Dickerson

Editing

The editing throughout the video is of a good quality, certain parts of the video have very skilled editing work such as the beginning. As you can see in the picture the group incorporates a black mist into the video. This may represent the depression/emotion of the character.  The majority of transitions are smooth however there are certain frames that do not cut to the beat which make it appear less fluent. Editing is also used to add colour to certain scenes which is a good effect as it changes it up from the normal scenes that the audience is becoming used too. This keeps the video interesting  and engaging. The highlight of the editing for me personally is the way when she slaps the boy it is perfectly cut to when the main beat comes in the song. Also the way they keep returning to the argument throughout the video, reminds the audience of the narrative and the transitions are smooth so it is clear there is an underlying storyline. The paste of the editing also matches the paste of the song which is important so it does not appear to be out of sync.

settings

The videos settings are genuinely very good as they are diverse and suite the scenes. A range of locations are used such as residential areas, the park, arcades, festivals and a school. All of these locations provide the perfect theme the video is trying to display which is  fun times. All locations used in the happy side of the film have loads of colours and are exciting showing her recovering from the breakup. This is a good effect when put in contrast to the plain locations that are used when she is on her own feeling upset about being cheated on. However my only criticism of the groups location choice in the video is they are not very original. Many videos use these type of locations and personally I view them as the same type of video settings as most other videos so can become a bit boring. I believe is different settings where used to other videos this would give the groups music video its own sense of uniqueness.

Lip syncing

The Lip Syncing in the video was genuinely to a high standard, however there were moments where the actors would face away from the camera when they were Lip syncing which made it difficult for the audience to see they were singing. However the Lip Syncing when shown was very good with there not being a clear difference between the artists voice and the actors impression. This is useful to Motion Studios as we were told our Lip syncing needed to be improved furthermore we can analyse this previous groups performance and try to copy the skill.

nARRATIVE

The Narrative of the story is simple but has a good impact on the video. Its about a young girl who was once in a relationship and is going through a breakup, due to being cheated on by her boyfriend. The video shows the story of her recovering and getting over the boy through a complication scenes where she is having fun with her friends and trying not to look back.  Even though this is a simple storyline it is perfect for the video as it suites the song as the lyrics appear to be about a breakup and "getting over" boys. it also leaves the audience with a feel good feeling showing the girl as happy again at the end of the video which is a good effect.

cAMERAWORK

The camera work throughout the video is skilled and suits the atmosphere it is trying to portray. For example when it is a shot of her reflecting it is steady, however when the shots of the festival are being filmed it is not as smooth. I believe this gives the video a positive effect as it shows how she is feeling while at the festival, having fun and messing around. Furthermore even though it is not as smooth it still works considering its scene. The establishing shot at the opening of video also has a good effect as it suits the calm introduction of the song before the paste increases. An eyeline shot during the festival makes the audience feel like they are there allowing them to fully understand the girls emotions giving the video a good atmosphere.   The only criticism i have of the groups camera work is the lack of diversity in the type of shots they took. Throughout the video it is mainly wide shots which can become very repetitive and boring for the audience.

oVERVIEW

Overall I believe the group produced a good video which was interesting and kept me interested. I would rate the video 3.5 stars out of 5.  My favourite part of the video was the quick editing which matched the paste and the good storyline which suited the song perfectly. However my criticisms of the video is the lip syncing could of been polished off to look more natural and the locations were not original. I believe if the group had introduced some different settings in their video it would of gave it the effect it needed to be of the best quality. It has been beneficial to analyse as it allowed me to highlight some mistakes their group made and i can make sure that we do not make the same mistakes and also we can refrence back to this video when we are looking at how we can improve our editing for example as they were very skilled editors.
