Preliminary Task: Evaluation

Our 30 Second Music Video:

• We chose to make our 30 second music video to the song 'Swinging Party' by Lorde.
• The genre of this song is Indie Pop.
• We decided to make a concept video for this task.

Preliminary Task Music Video: Strengths

One of the main strengths of our music video was that we followed the conventions of the indie pop genre well. Concept videos are common within this genre, so our music video allows the audience to recognise the genre without neccesarily knowing the song. A popular feature for a concept/indie pop music video to have is shots that appear to be irrelevant or inexplicable. We followed the conventions of both a concept and indie pop music video by including shots like this in our own video.

Preliminary Task Music Video: Strengths

Another strength in our music video was the editing. Bailey used Final Cut Pro to edit our music video, which allowed us to use certain techniques that we would not have been able to use with other editing programmes. During the editing process,  some of our clips were slowed down in order to make the movements in the clips fit the beat of the song (shown in the video below). We also ensured that our clips were cut on the beat to add a professional and polished quality to our video. Final Cut Pro was also used to decrease the saturation of our video, which gave it the same visual effect that is commonplace among music videos within the indie pop genre. In our video, we used tracking shots, panning shots, close-ups and mid shots, and I think that these shots reflect the genre well.

Preliminary Task Music Video: Weaknesses

I think that a weakness of our music video is that the shots don't have any particular meaning or significance. For our final video, we will definitely try to ensure that each of our clips has a purpose. At the time of us filming this video, we hadn't researched many theories, and had only analysed one other music video in detail. Before making our final video, we will have researched further into various theories and other music videos within our chosen genre and style, so our overall result will be much more thought out.

Another weakness that could be pointed out in our music video is that we didn't have a large variety of different shots in the video. For our final music video, we will have access to more equipment such as a stedicam and a jib, so we will be able to include more different shots in our video.

Conclusion: What Will I Do Differently Next Time?

From this task, I have learned how important research is. In order to make our final video the best it can be, I will research into various theories and music videos of our chosen genre and style to help with planning what our music video will include and why.

In our preliminary task video, we did not use many different camera shots or pieces of equipment. When making our final video, we will try to include a wide variety of shots. We can achieve this by using new equipment such as the stedicam and the jib. This will make our video seem more professional.
