Audience Expectations

By Pip Hawthorn

As part of some research for our film, we had to ask a group of people what they would expect to see whilst watching a film noir. Bella decided to present this in the format of a survey monkey; with the aim of reaching more people. Overall, this research will be beneficial to our work, so we can work out what changes we can improve to suit our audiences needs. The 9 question, questionnaire included questions on if people had seen a film noir, and what they would expect the key themes, setting, atmosphere and ending to be.

In order to reach more people, I sent this email with a link to the survey.

In conclusion, the data we have collected illustrates that even though 50% have not seen a film noir; the audience expects the narrative to be around a murder. On average, most people believe a film noir is set in the city with the underlying themes of; murder, love, betrayal, secrets and revenge. This data demonstrates the importance of the difference between a film noir and an average horror/crime investigation film. In addition, the people thought that the ending should be thought-provoking and include cliff-hangers. All the above points will be a helpful contribution to our final editing process; involving us making the atmosphere more darker and really accentuating the final cliff-hanger.
