EVALUATION QUESTION 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

MUSIC VIDEO

When I asked my audience for some feedback, I originally asked about my main product which is the promotional music video. The main question that I asked was 'Does the video make sense in relation to the song?' The answer that I got from that was that it did make sense. To test whether this was a true statement and not just people being nice I played the video without sound to some of my fellow sixth form student and asked them what they thought the mood of the song was and what the feelings of the artist was meant to be. Every time I did this, the answers came back that they thought the song was one describing a sad situation such as a break up or maybe a death but at parts, the song was intended to pick up and the mood would change. This is in fact the true message of the song so that filled me with great confidence for the video.

From this, I have learned that the video has been created in such a way that it does the job it was originally intended to do. The next thing to find out was how was this done. I asked the question to my audience, 'Why did you feel this was the meaning of the song?' This was answered in a way that I expected it to. They said that the low angles of the camera looking up at the artist shows that he is looking down towards the ground in a way that suggests he is upset and not feeling at his best (e.g. not holding his head up in confidence). This taught me that the camera angles used in the video along with a clear acting strategy are important factors in the production of a successful promotional music video.

MUSIC MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENT

I later asked my audience about their thoughts on the magazine advert. The advert is another promotional product for the album that I created the cover for. The intention of the magazine advert is to draw a link with the other products and to influence the audience to buy the album. I therefore asked my audience 'Does the magazine advert match the theme of the music video and song?' The answers that I received were rather positive. They said that the artist is again looking towards the ground, as if he is deep in thought about the person he is missing which is the exact intention. They therefore confirmed that the link between the two is strong.

I also asked the question to my audience 'Does the advert provide enough information for you to go and buy the product?' Again, the answers were very positive, as they said that the images at the bottom told them where they could buy it from and the advert gave the artists name and album name. They negative they found was that if someone had heard the song but not known who sang it, they would probably only recognize the album if the song was included so they suggested that if it was to be done again, the advert could include the phrase 'including the hit song Keep Your Head Up' or words to that effect. Over-all, I have learned that the simplistic approach and lack of overcrowding of words was a good choice and made a successful advert, minus the one point.

CD DIGIPACK

I then had to ask my audience about my CD digipack. This is the product that my main project (video) and the other ancillary product (advert) were promoting. The CD digipack had other intentions that those two and was not intending to promote a product, but to persuade the buyer that this was an album that they wanted to buy. The question that I asked my audience was 'Would you recognise this album to be of Folk Rock genre by looking at the cover?' The feedback to this was of slight mixed reactions. Some people claimed that the album cover matched the music video mood and the feeling that came from the advert, however, it did not represent a Folk Rock artist entirely. They felt that it would match the artist if you were to know of him before hand but if they were to pick it up without any prior knowledge they may not have recognised it straight away. They felt the colours were too grey and could have included more of the brown-esque colours that are naturally associated with the genre.

I learned from this that although I was making a conscious effort to accommodate the traits of my other products into the CD digipack, I neglected the first time listener by not accommodating their style and personality in it. If I was to repeat this course then that would definitely be something I would consider, as after all, it was not seen to be a major problem by my audience.
