What is it?

  • Cyber Bullying is a form of bullying on the internet.
  • It can happen any time of the day
  • Much harder to detect the source vs. real life bullies.
  • Near impossible to delete the messages once posted.
  • Many types of bullying are common.

How does it affect anyone?

It is a very disruptive form of behavior, causing people to avoid social and online situations.  It is pretty much the same as real bullying, causing the same kinds of depression and suicidal tendencies.  Since cyber bullying is harder to avoid its more of a problem.

Types of cyber bullying

  • Harassment
  • Flaming
  • Exclusion
  • Outing
  • Masquerading
  • Trolling

It is typically done though phone's but is also rampant with online games.

Involves sending offensive/malicious messages to an individual or a group and is often repeated multiple times.

Exclusion is the act of intentionally singling out and leaving a person out from an online group such as chats, games etc.  Then leaving malicious messages to them about it.

Pretending to be someone else and harassing someone, this can also be considered cyber stalking.

Trolling

  • Sole purpose of trolling is to anger someone.
  • They frequently hide behind a cloak of anonymity
  • Very poisonous to online gaming communities.
  • Mostly done to get a rise out of people and to amuse the person doing it.
  • Best way to deal with this behavior is to completely ignore it.

Griefers

Griefers are another form of trolling.  It is when a person goes out of their way to impeded or destroy someone elses work.

Ways to combat cyber bullying

  • Keep your identity secret.
  • Ignore the person doing it.
  • Report the behavior to the people running the game/site you are at.
