Background and Profile

Joe Chung is a senior creative technologist at R/GA.

What is R/GA? We are a brand, product and communications company. We deliver our best work when brand, design and technology come together to bring magic. From redesigning the future of mobility to shaping creative, future-forward ideas for traditional industries, we do it to build a more human future for all.

On a day-to-day basis, Joe uses technology to help provide creative solutions to help companies reach their goals – be it to launch a new product, raise awareness about various functions, tell their brand story, or more – all with the vision of creating exciting experiences for the end-user, and building the brand’s credibility.

Brief

2.1

Focusing on visual and interaction design, you will ideate, design, and prototype experiences that showcase the product of a fictional client. As part of the learning journey, you will go through an iterative process typical to client work in this area, which includes client objectives and incorporates client feedback, while balancing that with the overall conceptual goals that the activation set out to achieve.

Students will work in teams of two or three to create their proposed designed outcomes and document the process. Both will be presented on a microsite. Throughout the project, students should come prepared to build working prototypes. Technical challenges will be addressed and discussed in class to balance requirements, skills, and abilities, leading to a convincing and enjoyable result.

Process

Activations incorporate several elements such as interaction design, visual design, and technical design. Successful activations invites the visitor to play, blending these elements beautifully into the background, resulting in an immersive, cohesive, and unforgettable experience.

In this project, you will conceptualise and prototype an interactive experience that will serve as a proposal for an installation to effectively communicate the client's product through an engaging experience. You will receive feedback on the concept and prototype you develop, which will guide the iteration of your proposed ideas and designed outcomes.

Activations for brands what makes an activation unforgettable for visitor and client

 

Kickoff based on a client project briefing and working in teams, explore three possible concepts for the activation to propose to the client, where one will be selected for development

Prototypes create prototypes of different kinds to help the client understand the activation

 

Test and Refine create a test-scenario and invite users to test and evaluate your prototypes, against client criteria


Share document process, outcomes, proposed future activities, these will be made available online through a microsite

Glossary

Brand Activation

A brand activation is a process that involves creating experiences that allow an audience to interact with a brand, product or service. The objective of a brand activation is to build brand awareness, drive engagement, and increase loyalty through an experience that will leave a lasting impression on the audience. The idea is to create an emotional connection between the consumer and the brand, which can help to drive visibility and build a long-term relationship.

Interactive Experience 

An interactive experience is designed to invite and engage the audience through participation in an activity. The experience should be intuitive and playful, allowing the audience to engage without the need for instructions.

Interaction design

Interaction design is the design of digital products and services that focus on user behaviour and engagement. It involves designing the user interface, user experience, and the system's overall behaviour. Terry Winograd, a key figure in the field of human computer interaction, described interaction design as "the design of spaces for human communication and interaction." It requires an understanding of human psychology, communication, and social sciences to create products and services that are not only functional and usable but also delightful and engaging for users.

Experiments, Prototypes

An experiment here refers to quickly testing an idea, practising by trial and error, just making, trying and testing the unknown (technique), and learning through a process of approximation and correction until a satisfactory state is reached. A prototype, on the other hand, should show more intent and planning. It can be derived from a previous experiment. A prototype should be testable (by users, a target audience), refined and eventually lead to the final design outcome.

Glossary

Installation

An installation is a designed outcome that exists in physical space, ranging from immersive environments of interactive projections, to an object prominently presented in a space, to a curated arrangement of smaller artefacts presented in an exhibition-like display. An installation here is intended to stimulate audience engagement through playful participation and interaction.

Creative Coding

Creative coding refers to the practice of using computer programming to create original works of art, design, and other forms of creative expression. It involves the use of code as a tool for artistic and interactive exploration, experimentation, and creation. Processing, p5js, and TouchDesigner are software tools commonly used in creative coding to facilitate the creation of interactive digital art, installations, performances, and other forms of new media. These applications allow artists and designers to use programming languages to manipulate digital media and create dynamic, interactive experiences for their audiences. Creative coding combines traditional artistic practices with technology and coding to explore new modes of creative expression and to push the boundaries of what is possible in art and

design. Creative Coding can be used to generate screen-based visuals in real-time, interactions with computer systems through digital and physical interfaces, design of 2D or 3D objects that can be digitally fabricated, and more.
