What is the peloton?

By riding close together cyclists conserve energy. With less air resistance, it feels easier.  

How is this like a classroom?

Why is it useful?

In most classrooms, there are a few cyclists (students) working very hard and they're at the front of the pack.   

There may be a few at the back, doing little work and at risk of falling further and further behind.  

Most students in the pack work hard enough to get by but are not putting in maximum effort - after all, GCSEs or A Level are a long race, not a sprint.  

At some point, individual riders decide to go for it.  They put in a burst of effort, break away from the pack and give themselves the chance of winning the race.

How is this like approaching exams? 

As exams approach, some students decide to put in more effort.  The result is that they go faster in the race - make more progress - and end up crossing the finish line with a much better result. 

What happens in a race?

Are you out front, working hard?  

Perhaps because you love the subject, know it's important for your future plans, get on well with the teacher?

Are you in the peloton, doing enough to get by, handing in homework...

 ...paying attention, but not doing anything extra?

...Are you near the back, knowing there are things you're unsure about or not having caught up on, but not doing anything about it?

Being honest with yourself

It's easy to look at our group of friends and convince ourselves that, because we're doing a similar amount of work, that we must be working an average amount.  

However......

 

try to think about the class as a whole ...

Research has found that students tend to surround themselves with people doing similar amounts of work to them. 

Your friends will find it reassuring to think that others are doing the same as them - even if actually the rest of the class is doing more! 

It becomes like a self-fulfilling prophecy!!

Think carefully about the pack.  

What is the typical behaviour of those who are:

How can they get back to the pack?  

 

What training / tools / coaching do theyneed?

What exactly are you going to do to improve your racing ability?

Clue:  It's not just because they're 'naturally clever'.  That's just an excuse!

How could they have pushed themselves a bit harder rather than conserving energy?

Perhaps they:

  • review their notes after every lesson / week

  • complete additional tasks to practise skills

  • ask questions when they're not sure

Think of an example of where you chose to stick in the pack rather than push for the front.

What extra work could you have done?
