select a topic

The GLAM Workbench is organised by repository, collection type, or topic.

Each topic includes a list of Jupyter notebooks (& sometimes data sources)

Notebooks

For each notebook there's a number of different links

notebook LINKS

WHY are there multiple links?

  • Each link provides a different view of the notebook
  • Some are static and some are live
  • Each view has a different purpose

static vs live

  • static views let you look at a notebook, but you can't edit them or run code
  • live views let you view, edit, and run the code

STATIC!

GiTHUB

STATIC!

GitHub provides easy access to the notebook's code

NBVIEWER

STATIC!

NBViewer provides a nicely rendered version of the notebook that's great for sharing

LIVE!

LIVE LINKS OPEN IN

  • 'Classic' notebook
  • Jupyter Lab
  • or Appmode

The 'CLASSIC' notebook

LIVE!

One notebook per browser tab

JUPYTER LAB

LIVE!

Multiple notebooks (& file explorer) in a single desktop

APPMODE

LIVE!

Hides the code & runs the notebook as an app

APPMODE IN ACTION

LIVE!

BUT WHERE are the live notebooks actually running?

  • the live links open using Binder
  • Binder creates a customised computing environment & loads the notebook in it
  • runs in your browser, no need to install any software
  • be patient! it can take a little while to load

CLICKING on a binder link

BINDER LIMITATIONS

  • inactive notebooks are closed after about 10 minutes
  • your work is not saved between sessions, download what you want to keep!
