What is Life Safety?
LIFE SAFETY REQUIRES BATTERIES
BATTERY BASICS

ISOLITE
BATTERY TECHNOLOGY
Chalk Talk
- Batteries store chemical energy and release it as electrical energy when needed
Basic Definition
WHAT IS A BATTERY?
BATTERY BASICS
- These cells are combined to meet the desired output
- Inside each cell, a chemical reaction occurs between two materials (electrodes) in a liquid or gel (electrolyte), producing a flow of electrons (electricity)

- Batteries are often divided into cells

All batteries are slowly dying
Principals of Batteries

They can also die quickly from:

WHAT IS A BATTERY?
BATTERY BASICS
- The capacity (Ah) decreases over time
- Temperature
- Improper charging / discharging

Keep them conditioned. Anything around room temperature is ideal.
How Can We Prolong Battery Life?
Charging and discharging is handled for you.
All that's really required is:
For Life Safety:
WHAT IS A BATTERY?
BATTERY BASICS
Some batteries can die very quickly and violently.
For most batteries, the way in which they are discharged matters.
Some batteries like exercise, some do not
Overcharging and over-discharging is one of the quickest ways to decrease a batteries life.
- This is called thermal runaway.
- This includes rate and depth of charge and discharge.
2. Keep the batteries as close to room temperature as possible. If it's going outside, it's best it comes with a heater.
1. Don't let the devices/batteries sit disconnected for too long.

DIFFERENT FLAVORS
BATTERY CHEMISTRIES
2008
Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC)
High energy lithium-ion chemistry. Now mainstream in EVs and consumer electronics.
1996
Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP)
A safer lithium-ion variant. Long life, thermally stable. Big in energy storage and EVs.
1989
Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH)
Safer than NiCd, better energy density. Used in Hybrid vehicles.
1899
Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd)
First alkaline rechargeable battery. Good performance, but toxic cadmium.
1859
Lead Acid
First rechargeable battery. Still used in cars, inverter systems. Cheap but heavy.

CHEMISTRIES IN LIFE SAFETY
- Dominated by lead acid. Might start to see other chemistries at smaller sizes.
Inverter Systems
- Liable to see any of the chemistries.
- More industrial means more likely to see lead acid because "lunch boxes" aren't so size limited.
- More aestetic signs and lights will use some of the more energy dense chemistries.
Exit Signs & Emergency Lights
- Mostly NiCd due to great temperature resistance.
- Many products will come with a "heater" option.
