An LED Emergency Driver is an electronic device that is furnished with a battery that sits on the low voltage (LED) side of a standard architectural LED Driver. The emergency driver illuminates the LED lights in the event of a power failure.

EMERGENCY DRIVER DEFINIITION

BACKGROUND

Emergency drivers are distinct from micro-inverters, which sit on the front-end (AC) side of the LED driver and continue to provide AC power in an emergency. These devices are out of scope this presentation.

NOTES

All of NFPA 101 still applies to emergency driver installations.

Utilizes the Existing LED Fixtures

Mostly the Same Building Wiring Strategy (More on Next Slide...)

Doesn't require any additional control hardware outside the fixture

Doesn't occupy space in the electrical closet

ARCHITECTURAL BENEFITS

BACKGROUND

- This will result in a diminished lamp brightness in emergency mode.

- Photometric simulations need to be run with this diminished light output

Emergency LED Drivers must be specified to be lower than the wattage of the fixture they're connected to.

SPECIFICATION: ELECTRICAL

NEED TO KNOW

Emergency LED Drivers require a connection to un-switched/un-controlled utility power to observe local power failures.

- This does have wiring implications in that there are 2 "live" conductors going to the emergency fixture

Emergency Drivers operate independently of architectural lighting controls, no special driver specification is required.

- Some jurisdictions allow remote mounting...

- But some do not. Your mileage may vary.
- Wiring distances need to be considered.

Emergency Drivers are large, you have to have a fixture that will fit them.

SPECIFICATION: MECHANICAL

NEED TO KNOW

Space must be provided on or around the fixture for the test button and LED.

There are some project management headaches associated with having very similar fixtures with very different functions

Not clear who is going to replace the drivers down the road.  Driver manufacturer? Fixture manufacturer? This can result in agency headaches

We're doing a minor refresh of the EMP product line
