Code Refresher
NFPA 101 - 7.9.2.3
- Failure of a public utility or other outside electrical power supply
- Opening of a circuit breaker or fuse
The emergency lighting system shall be arranged to provide the required illumination automatically in the event of any interruption of normal lighting due to any of the following:
- Manual act(s), including accidental opening of a switch controlling normal lighting facilities

Localized Failure
The ELCDs go as close to the lights as possible
Some Things to Keep In Mind
The Inverter may not be in "emergency mode" at the same time as the downstream lights
- They should be observing the power feed that goes to the lights
- They should not be observing the power feed going to the inverter

Automatic Load Control Relay
ISOLITE
TRANSFERRING POWER, THE ELCDs
Chalk Talk
A device used to set normally dimmed or normally-off switched emergency lighting equipment to full power illumination levels in the event of a loss of the normal supply by bypassing the dimming/switching controls, and to return the emergency lighting equipment to normal status when the device senses the normal supply has been restored.
Definition
ALCR Devices are used to override dimming/switching controls. They require a Normally On power source.
In Plain English

Branch Circuit Emergency Lighting Transfer Switch
ISOLITE
TRANSFERRING POWER, THE ELCDs
Chalk Talk
A device connected on the load side of a branch-circuit over-current protective device that transfers only emergency lighting loads from the normal supply to an emergency supply.
Definition
BCELTS devices change the power source that supplies power to a fixture. They convert Normally Off sources into Normally On sources.
In Plain English
