What are some of the characteristics of scholarly/academic sources?

What to look for

  • Author 
  • Usually lengthy (5-20 pages)
  • Type of Publication (academic, scholarly, or peer-reviewed journal)
  • Cites other sources
  • Reports on original research 
  • May include charts, graphs, numbers, etc.

Is my source relevant?

If it's a research study, make sure you understand the research question, methods, and results. Avoid just picking bits and pieces that seem like they might fit with your topic!

Summarize

Identify gaps or lingering questions

Lit Review

Group articles into thematic clusters, or subtopics to help organize your review.

Explore questions that need further research within the topic. What does the research not address/what are the shortcomings?

Look for connections and links between your sources. Analyze and compare articles.
