WHAT IS UX DESIGN and FED?
AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
TODAY
- What is UX Design and FED?
- What do you actually do?
- And what Design/FED process looks like
- How Partnerships UX works with GSD
- How you can use UX process to help your work?
- How can we work effectively with your team on projects?
WHAT DO YOU THINK A UX DESIGNER AT SHOPIFY DOES?
WHAT DO YOU THINK A FRONT END DEVELOPER AT SHOPIFY DOES?
USER EXPERIENCE
SHOPIFY UX
- User Research
- Content
- Design
- Front-End Development (FED)
- Docs/Technical Writing
GENERALIST / SPECIALIST
- As a front-end developer at Shopify, you specialize in front-end development and dive deep into your craft
- You are also expected to care about research, content, and design
WHAT WE DON't DO
MAKE THE THINGs LOOK PRETTY.
( UX Designers )
BUILD THE THING.
( Front End Developers )
WE DO DESIGN and build things
But designing or building something - isn't always the right solution to the problem.
User experience DESIGN
PROBLEM SOLVing
We want to find the ultimate solution
WE want to find A SOLUTION that
- Is high-impact
- Adds real value
- Is scalable
- Lasts in the long term
champion for the user
Advocate for the user at all times
We care about customers ... sort of
Rather than sell to our users, instead we want to engage them by creating something that they want
In UX we generally don’t view our users as customers, because we’re not focused on selling them something
understanding
experience
- User Personas
- Journey Mapping
- Interviews and testing
IDEA GENERATION
- Expert brainstormers
- Mind-mapping and Design sprints
research & process to craft strategic design solutions
Design solutions often come with visuals, but it's not the starting point
Iteration is a huge part of design
FRONT END DEVELOPER
AKA
FED
CLIENT SIDE
Everything the user sees and interacts with
We write code
- HTML, CSS, and Javascript
- A lot of the time we write code in other languages where the end result is HTML, CSS and Javascript
We care about:
- Accessibility, performance, design, compatibility, all different devices, testing, animation, interaction, and more.
HIGHLY INVESTED
IN UX DESIGN
We maintain consistency
- Maintain code style guides
- Marketing Styleguide / Admin Styleguide
WE HAVE TO BE OPINIONATED
BECAUSE OF IT
We are facilitators
We act as a intermediary between design and engineering - because we understand the concerns and goals of both
FOLLOW ENGINEERING PRINCIPALS
Simplicity over complexity, readability, and building for the long term
Outnumbered
There are many more designers and engineers than there are FEDs
TESTING AND QA
WHAT DOES MY DAY LOOK LIKE?
- Code reviews and notifications
- Meetings with designers and participating in fresh eyes
- Contributing back to Shopify's codebase (creating patterns (UI components) that other FEDs can use
- Working on projects, testing, and shipping code

WORKING WITH PARTNERSHIPS UX AND GSD
Project
- Are high value, high effort. Take more than 1 week to solve.
- May have ambiguous requirements. It may not be easy to define required effort or scope.
- May involve multiple teams, stakeholders, and disciplines.
- Benefit from the GSD@scale framework and should use it. They should go through GSD flows, have a project champion, a brief, regular updates, etc. (Read more about GSD@scale here)
TASKS
- Are high value, low effort. Take hours or days to solve.
- Have clearly defined requirements and success criteria.
- Probably do not need a full dedicated team to complete.
BRING US IN EARLY
When you starting thinking about an idea, talk to us. We want to help you with a solution!
THINK ABOUT THE PROBLEM.
Is it really a problem, or an assumption?
Keep asking why? Kind of like a 5 year old.
Get us INVESTED
As UX we need to be invested in a project for us to make it amazing. We also need to advocate the reasoning behind a project or task to our peers.
