Do's of WordPress Freelancing
Have A Contract
Create your own contract or find a nice starting point.
https://gist.github.com/malarkey/4031110
Make it clear what you need project starts, when it is considered "complete", and how you will be paid.
Much much more!
Get A Clear Outline of The Project
Be too specific rather than not specific enough
Are they expecting to move content around like in Elementor?
API integrations, shopping cart, data importing?
Hosting, billing, plugins
Charge by Milestones and A Fixed-price
Homepage (milestone 1)
About, Contact, Blog (milestone 2)
Store Archive and Single (milestone 3)
Checkout Process (milestone 4)
Launch (milestone 5)
Have a plugin policy
Lock down the installing of plugins if you are going to be in charge of the site going forward.
Same should go for Core WordPress
If this doesn't apply to you, think about putting something in the contract that says you are not responsible for managing plugins or their effects.
Clean up the admin
Contact agencies for Extra Work
Look in your area for Agencies that work with WordPress
Make connections with employees for long term work outside of the Agency
Dont's of WordPress Freelancing
Don't Use A Headless Setup.
Unless...
Unless you get explicit permission, don't use a headless setup
No plugins, potential build times, and lots of unexpected behavior
Don't Accidentally Become A Host
Make the client set up their own account on the host of their choosing
You can recommend them to a host and make some $$$
You don't want to get phone calls when their server goes down at 2am
Don't Manage Client's Plugin Licenses
You don't want to be tracking down reimbursement for plugins when they expire
Consider it if you have a developer license (unlimited sites).
Don't Spread Yourself Too Thin
Become comfortable saying "No"
It takes time to produce great work
Work/Life balance is a real thing
Don't Do A Bad Job
This can come down to poor
execution
OR poor planning
Don't bite off more than you can chew
Don't Do Cheap Work For Cheap Clients
There are plenty of developers on Fiverr that will do the cheap work for cheap clients
If you need a portfolio, reach out to Charities
Thank You!
