ONLY TARGET LANGUAGE?

There are some "holy cows" in language-teaching, one of them - using only the target language in the classroom. There are advocates and haters of the approach. Which side are you at? :)

  • Do you use only the target language with your students?
  • If yes, how do you work with the beginners?
  • If no - when, why and how do you use another, common language with the student? (and what is this common language?)
  • Have you observed positive or negative effects of either way?
  • Using only target language when we are forced to - when there is no other common language with the student - did it happen to you?

  • - “involuntary unlicensed psychotherapist” – when we approach our students too closely, we often are exposed to his/her hesitations, important life choices (as it happens very often, learning a language is liable to be connected to serious life circumstances) – how do we deal with it?​
     

 

  • - what if the friendship is not meant to be?
    I mean, the student chooses the teacher and decides whether to co    ntinue learning with him\her or not. Could the choice be mutual? Should it be mutual? Can a teacher "fire" a student, in Murilo's words? Let's discuss our concerns and share our experiences about it.
