WikiExpedition @ zh-wikipedia 2006~

In 2006, Taiwan Wikipedians worked together with the National Taiwan University Tour Club to co-host the first WikiExpedition.
In the morning we were guided around the campus and in the afternoon we contribut our work into Wikis to imporove its content.

In earlier expeditions, we focused on improving the image content.
The event is mostly conducted on foot, and combined with guides to local history and cultures.

Wikimanbo

Wikimedia Commons

WikiMambo is the earlier example of the WikiExpedition style event. As early as 2014, WikiMambo already incorporated the concept of cultural expedition and worked with OpenStreetMap Taiwan to promote uploading streetview photos to Wikimedia Commons and OpenStreetMaps to assist the update of GPS information

OpenStreetMap Taiwan community applies for grants to conduct the event, switches from mainly on foot to driving, equipped with 360-degree camera to record the streetview, to improve the gaps in Taiwan local data. The contribution is then later uploaded to OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, etc.

Though not emphasised at the time, in Taiwan there are many small temples dotted along the rural streets.
Though small, they are the embodiment of many local cultures and history, and should be recognized as important landmarks.

In 2024, Wikidata Taiwan cooperated with community partners to hold the first Taiwan Temple workshop to improve the content on Wikidata and OpenStreetMap with updated or new photos of temples.

The event starts with participants rallying at Car rental or Train/High-Speed Rail Station to setup equipment and double-check the routes.

Work with the temple and local cultural workers to understand the history around the area and take pictures to improve articles in Wikipedia.

The event not only records the buildings, religions, art, and cultural records, the Steles in the temples are also rich in cultural and historical importance that could serve future research and should be recorded as well.

Conclusion

The images are the area covered in the two events held in August and July 2025; The data is not only uploaded to Mapillary, but we also sync it to Panoramax

  • The best practice of the expedition still needs improvement.

    • Too much guided tours will inevitably compress the points of interest we could cover.

    • The event is too much for a single-day operation, yet it is also too cumbersome to expand it into a multiday event.

    • Travel limitations restricted our latitude to plan out the event.

  • Data Reuse needs more exploration

    • Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons are easy to work with.

    • However, we need to promote the usage of such data in other sister projects, and

    • Explore new possibilities to reuse the data we've collected.
