DOES A SUBMARINE HAVE WINDOWS ?

Who am I ?

Amir Gal Or

You probably know me as the father of this guy

I've also been in the Israeli Naval Forces for 7 years.

DOES A SUBMARINE HAVE WINDOWS ?

So...

LET'S VOTE

Yes ?

No ?

Well ?

What's the right answer ?

I Don't Care!

What do you see when you imagine a submarine ?

Let's start...

ISRAEL

well - basically - all are true

:-)

Let's Think...

What would we need submarines for ?

What missions would it carry ?

Research underwater life

Monitor earth's oceans

Look at fish & reefs

Espionage

Explorations

Be really cool

So

Recreational - Fun

Science - Research

Military - Navy

Do they have windows ?

we have 'types' of submarines

Why do naval submarines not have windows ?

Let's think...

Naval Submarines need to be

Stealth

Fast

Big

able to carry  allot of people

able to carry allot of equipment

able to dive deep

Hide

Quiet

SAFE

1. They don't need windows

It's very dark in the deep ocean

There's very little to see

Submarines are in deep water most of the time.

adding a 'window' would require adding 'lights' - that would not be very stealthy

Submarines operate in open ocean and stay away from any kind of ocean floor

2. Need to be safe in deep sea

Glass does not handle pressure as well as steal

Glass is more easily damaged by vibrations

The deeper you dive the more 'pressure' you will feel

In times of war, can be caused by explosions

Great...

No Windows...

Than...

How do people on board a submarine 'see' the outside ?

We adopted an idea from nature

Echolocation

Humans navigate using our eyes

What happens when you don't look

Echolocation

'Seeing by using sound'

Let's have an experiment

Animals send out sound waves using their mouth or nose.

When the sound hits an object an echo comes back.

The animal identifies an object by the sound of the echo.

They can even tell the size, shape and texture of a tiny insect from its echo

animals use echolocation to navigate and find food.

For shorts

  • Animal transmit sound
  • pickup the echo
  • Their brain interprets the sound to an image

Who uses Echo-Location

What do we have on board a submarine ?

1. Sonar

This is the same as with

The computer functions as the 'brain' to interpret image from sound

We can also map ocean floor...

Other means by which we can 'see' ?

Another idea from nature

Passive Tracking

A Snake

Instead - they sense and track movements by 'feeling' vibrations in the air

Does not have ears.

Sonar - Passive

Periscope

Requires 'Periscope Depth' - 60 feet / 18 Meter

This depth makes the submarine more detectable

The periscope (small) is detectable

Some facts

Naval Submarines

How deep can it go ?

Military is classified

- US Navy would say more than 1600ft (Seawolf)

- Russian Navy... more :)

How long can it stay underwater ?

Some US Navy Submarines can stay up to 3 months

What energy source do they operate on ?

Diesel (Fuel) / Nuclear

For comparison

- The 'Alvin' can dive up to 22,000 feet still carrying 3 people

Questions ?

Requirements

What should people on these subs be able to 'do'

How long do you think people would want to stay on it ?

How will we power such a submarine ?

How many people on board ?

What missions should the submarine perform ?

Safety

How much would it cost

Back to our Quesion

DOES A              SUBMARINE HAVE WINDOWS ?

When I want to buy a submarine what should I think of ?

So...

My  List

So let's 'classify' submarines

Let's Work...

What do I mean

Let's think by ourselves - what do we require from each 'type' of submarine
